The Truth about Autism and Sonograms

Sonograms are rapidly replacing old procedures as they have become a trusted and safe procedure. With the excetion of some minor heat and bubbles, Ultrasonography is rather harmless and painless. With that being said there have been discussions in recent years about Sonograms causing Autism.

About Heat and Sound

In several cases, doctors have noticed that fetuses move away from the path of high-frequency sound waves as they feel heat and vibrations at the same time. According to the Food and Drug Administration, Ultrasonography is a form of energy. Even at low levels , it is thought that some minor effets are possible through Sonography. The rise in temperature and jarring vibrations are said to sound similar to a subway train entering the station from the baby?s point of view. When the transducer is pointed directly at the hydrophone in the mother?s womb the sound waves from the Sonogram are amplified to this level.

Although the rise of temperature may not be felt by the mother, the developing systems of the fetus, particularly the central nervous system or CNS may be greatly detected. Recent studies have suggested that a rise in body temperature, whether fetal or maternal can be the underlying cause of some birth defects. The central nervous system appears to be effected the most as a consequence of this. The main explanation seems to be the death of cells and delay in proliferation of neuroblasts.

Increasing Numbers

Many studies involving doctors and experts in the field suggest that more birth defects and the rise of Autistic children is the byproduct of those who have had more than on Sonogram during their pregnancy. The fetus is exposed to the sound waves of a Sonogram for approximately a half an hour for each session. It is not uncommon for expectant parents to want a Sonogram to determine the sex of the baby even though the Sonogram was originally intended to detect abnormalities and positioning of the fetus.

The irrelevant and unimportant purpose of the procedure could lead to autism and other problems in the future. Several claim that the benefits of ultrasound far outweigh the risks. However, studies have discovered that in both high and low-risk cases, sonograms did not improve the condition or outcome of pregnancies. There are those that continue to debate over the justification of undergoing a procedure that will not be safe for unborn children, especially with the rise in Autism.

Agencies Fighting Autism

The World Health Organization or WHO has already written a report in the past regarding the effects of ultrasound on different biological systems. The outcome of those reports indicate that the Sonogram can cause unwanted changes and functioning in the neurological system as wells as the birth of an underweight infant.

These 2 groups are not the only ones that have joined the fight against Autism, there are others. With the advent of the information highway, you can join many groups online to learn more about Autism. There are also many publications and studies ongoing in major Universities to continue testing and to find the real cause of Autism.
