Four Ways To Hedge Your Stock Bets With Options | Options ...

As you may already be aware, hedging is a popular options strategy -- and why not? Options offer a reasonably priced, low-risk method of protecting against major losses on your equity investments. This article highlights four common ways you can use option contracts to hedge your market positions.

Protect Individual Stock Investments

First off, we have the protective put, which is also referred to as a "married put." As you may already be aware, buying (to open) a put option gives you the right, but not the obligation, to sell 100 shares of the underlying stock at the strike price of the contract. This bearish strategy is described as a "long put."

So, let's say that you own 1,000 shares of Stock XYZ. It's a relatively solid stock that you've held in your portfolio for a while, yielding a considerable gain of 155%. Ideally, you'd like to keep your shares, since you're collecting a respectable dividend and you are encouraged by the company's long-term prospects.

However, there's a recent fundamental development that has made you a bit nervous. XYZ's CEO of 25 years has departed the company, and you're anxious the shift to a new chief executive could have a negative impact on the stock price.

In this scenario, there's no need to panic-sell the shares -- nor do you need to sit by helplessly and watch your profits erode. Instead, you can ease your anxieties by buying a protective put. To implement the strategy, simply buy (to open) one put option for every 100 shares you'd like to insure (in this case, you would need 10 puts to protect all 1,000 shares).

There are no strict rules, but try to match the strike price of your puts with your preferred exit price on the stock. If XYZ is hovering at $58 per share, and you don't want to own the shares below $50, considering buying the 50-strike puts. Meanwhile, choose a time frame that aligns with your expected period of weak (or uncertain) price action. In this example, you'll probably have a good idea after three months or so whether you should head for the exits, or hold onto the stock.

If your fears come to fruition and the stock declines, your put options will go in the money. You can then exercise your option to sell the shares at the strike price, thereby securing a comfortable exit price. In other words, the purchase of the put options has capped your downside risk.

However, even if the puts expire worthless, there's an upside: you still own a stock on which you're bullish long-term. Plus, the protective puts have given you peace of mind, which could help you rest a little easier at night.

Guard Against Sector-Specific Weakness

As the popularity of exchange-traded funds (ETF) continues to grow, there is an array of hedging opportunities. There are now ETFs available on nearly every sector of the market, which is great news for speculators.

Let's take a look at this example. If you own a variety of large-cap tech stocks, it would be pretty tedious to buy a protective put on each individual security (not to mention it would cost you a bundle in brokerage fees). However, that doesn't change the fact that you're concerned about the potentially negative effects of a slowdown in corporate IT spending.

If you expect this fundamental development to have an ill effect on some of your tech holdings, but you'd prefer to keep the shares over the long term, simply find an ETF that's based on the sector in question. In this example, it would be the PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ), which tracks powerhouse stocks such as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC). To hedge your large-cap tech investments, purchase one put option per 1,000 shares you'd like to insure.

The possible outcomes here are roughly the same as with a straightforward protective put. However, bear in mind that ETFs won't necessarily track the movements of your stocks directly, due to their unique compositions. For example, AAPL controls a much larger percentage of the QQQ compared with INTC. So, you could theoretically lose money on your Intel shares, while the QQQ remains perched above the strike price of your puts, due to a simultaneous surge in AAPL shares.

Happily, though, a large number of sectors have more than one dedicated ETF, so you should be able to pick and choose. Be sure to do some research before you purchase put protection, as it definitely pays to keep an eye on the weighting assigned to each asset within the ETF.

Last but not least, it bears mentioning that you will most likely not be exercising your option, as you would with a protective put -- unless you happen to have a couple hundred shares of the appropriate ETF ready to sell. Rather, if your option goes in the money, you can simply sell to close prior to expiration in order to lock in a gain.

No positions in stocks mentioned.

Make your banner ads look unlike what a typical banner ad looks like. Work on improving the appearance of your banner ads, and visitors will be more enthusiastic about clicking on them.

If a customer buys something, try showing them some similar items that they may also be interested in. If you have a website that has books and people buy a novel, offer them a selection of similar novels. The more definitive you can be in matching your suggestions to their prior purchases, the more successful your cross-sell campaign will be.

The URL for your business?s website should be clear and memorable. If you can, it is best to include your business?s name or major brand in the URL. Keep your website address simple so that searchers can easily remember how to get to your site.

Internet marketing does not have a set formula, in reality you can say it is composed of half science and half art. Prior to starting your online marketing, you need to look at it from both sides. Be analytical of relevant data while expressing your creative side through the aesthetics and theme of your site.

How do you want to advertise your site? There are quite a few cheap and even free ways to advertise. Think about creating a blog, putting up posters containing your site?s URL, or try to create a social networking page. There are lots of different ways to get many people to visit your site. Just get creative!

Your website should be interesting and well-designed. Your website will become the main showpiece of the Internet marketing campaign you build. You have to make it good so that it will convince visitors to stay. Engaging the visitor is key, because as they build interest, they stay longer and purchase more often.

Low Rates, Tight Lending Spur Huge Year for VA Loans | Zillow Blog

Need another sign that conventional lending is still tight?

Riding a surge of refinance loans, VA loan volume year-over-year jumped 51 percent in fiscal year 2012, according to recently released data from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Loan volume has soared 305 percent since FY07.

Military borrowers continue to flock to the program?s flexible underwriting requirements and financial benefits, which include no down payment, higher allowable debt-to-income ratios, no private mortgage insurance and in some cases refinance loans without appraisals.

Right now VA lenders are generally looking for a credit score of at least 620. In contrast, a recent National Association of Realtors survey found that the average FICO score on an FHA denial in May was 669, and borrowers with scores at or above 740 comprised 53 percent of loans in August.

Consistent growth

To get a sense of the recent rise, take a look at total VA loans since FY07:

  • FY12: 539,884
  • FY11: 357,592
  • FY10: 314,011
  • FY09: 325,690
  • FY08: 179,670
  • FY07: 133,313

This year?s total is the highest since 1994. Loan volume increased at least 25 percent in all 50 states, including significant year-over-year gains in Utah (98 percent), Hawaii (89 percent), Virginia (69 percent), Nebraska (67 percent) and California and Massachusetts (65 percent).

The recent growth of the program comes in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown and the lending restrictions that followed. Military borrowers have found it increasingly difficult to secure conventional financing, and even the minimum 3.5 percent down payment on an FHA loan can prove too much for military families.

That?s why this nearly 70-year-old no down payment loan program continues to make a tremendous difference for veterans and active military.

Refinance boom

Historically low interest rates also continue to drive the VA boom. The agency guaranteed nearly 340,000 refinance loans in FY12, almost double last year?s total. Purchase loans increased about 8 percent.

The VA?s Streamline refinance program allows qualified borrowers to take advantage of low rates with little hassle. Some lenders can offer this VA-to-VA option without an appraisal to underwater homeowners.

Russell Means, Indian activist and actor, dies at 72

Joshua Lott / Reuters file

American Indian activist Russell Means, seen here at his Scottsdale, Ariz., home in October 2011, helped lead protests for Native American rights.

By NBC News staff and news services

Russell Means, the American Indian activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee and who later became a Hollywood actor, has died. He was 72.

Means died Monday at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said. The firebrand former leader of the American Indian Movement and one-time Libertarian Party candidate for U.S. president had been battling advanced esophageal cancer.

?

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation,?Means joined the American Indian Movement in 1968 and soon became one of the group's prominent leaders. He took part in an occupation of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters in Washington in 1972, and helped lead the 71-day standoff with federal authorities at Wounded Knee on Pine Ridge in 1973.

He found himself dogged for decades by questions about AIM?s alleged involvement in the slaying of a tribe member and the several gun battles with federal officers during the occupation of Wounded Knee, but denied the group ever promoted violence.

"You people who want to continue to put AIM in this certain pocket of illegality, I can't stand you people," Means said, lashing out an at audience member question during an April gathering commemorating the uprising's 40th anniversary. "I wish I was a little bit healthier and a little bit younger, because I wouldn't just talk."

Feb. 27, 1983: NBC's Chris Wallace and Fred Briggs look back at Wounded Knee South Dakota on the 10th anniversary of the takeover that was led by Russell Means of the American Indian Movement.?

Means told The Associated Press in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians, and that Native Americans were ashamed of their heritage.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said. "And there was a plethora of dozens if not hundreds of athletic teams that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

The movement eventually faded away, the result of Native Americans becoming self-aware and self-determined, Means said.

Means had fought for Native American rights since the 1960s, when he first protested college and professional sports teams' use of Indian images as mascots, which he said were demeaning caricatures of his people.

Leaders of the American Indian Movement, from left, Dennis Banks, Russell Means and an unidentified third man appear at a press conference to list demands of the federal government for an increase in financial aid for the town of Wounded Knee, S.D., on March 16, 1973.

Means was arrested numerous times during his long career of protest and spent several periods in jail.

He ran unsuccessfully for president of his tribe and sought the Libertarian nomination for U.S. president, losing to Congressman Ron Paul at the party's 1987 national convention.

Means? acting career began in 1992 when he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans." He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest-starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Means kept busy with his Hollywood career even as he battled the cancer that finally took his life.?The Internet Movie Database reports that Means had recently completed projects, and had more in the works.

Means appeared in a film called "Tiger Eyes," which was based on a Judy Blume novel. Means' son, Tatanka Means, starred. The film screened Sunday at the Sante Fe Independent Film Festival.

The Means duo also are credited in "Winnetou: The Beginning," set for a 2013 release.

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in his autobiography, admitting to his frailties and evils but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Salomon, the tribal spokeswoman, called Means' death a "great loss" for the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

(AP) ? South Korean activists floated balloons carrying tens of thousands of anti-Pyongyang leaflets into North Korea, eluding police who had disrupted an earlier launch attempt due to threats from North Korea.

North Korea's military warned last week that it would strike if the South Korean activists carried through with their plan, and South Korea pledged to retaliate if it was attacked.

South Korean police, citing security concerns, had sent hundreds of officers Monday to seal off roads and prevent the activists and other people from gathering at an announced launch site near the border. Residents in the area were also asked to evacuate to underground facilities, according to local official Kim Jin-a.

Later in the day, some of the activists, mostly North Korean defectors, moved to another site near the border that was not guarded by police and launched the balloons. They had described the police response as a surrender.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said there were no suspicious activities from North Korea's military.

Before acting Monday, the South Korean government had implored activists to stop their campaign but had cited freedom of speech in not making further attempts to intervene. South Korean activists have sent leaflets across the border in the past, and North Korea has issued similar threats to attack without following through.

Seoul's Yonhap news agency reported Monday that the ban on entering the border area was imposed as South Korea detected that North Korea had uncovered artillery muzzle covers and deployed troops to artillery positions in possible preparation for an attack. Yonhap cited no source for the information.

Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok told reporters North Korea was believed to have acted in line with carrying out its threat. He declined to elaborate on the North's army movement as that was confidential military information.

He said South Korea had bolstered its military readiness following the North's threat and would "strongly" retaliate if attacked.

The activists said they floated balloons carrying about 120,000 leaflets critical of North Korea's young leader Kim Jong Un and his country's alleged human rights abuses. They said they wanted to let North Korean people know the true nature of their country.

"We could not delay our plans to send anti-North Korea leaflets because it is our love toward our northern brothers," the activists wrote in a statement posted on the website of Seoul-based Free North Korea Radio, one of civic organizations involved in the leafleting.

Lead activist Park Sang-hak had said the ban on entering the border area was tantamount to yielding to Pyongyang's threat.

"It's surrender. It's clearly surrender," he said.

The top U.S. envoy on North Korea urged Pyongyang to stop issuing destabilizing threats.

"It is grossly disproportionate to have threatened to respond to balloons with bombs," Glyn Davies told reporters in Beijing after meeting with Chinese officials.

China, the North's main ally and biggest aid source, welcomed South Korean efforts to quash the balloon-flying and urged all parties to exercise restraint.

"As a close neighbor to the peninsula, China supports dialogue and discussions between North Korea and South Korea in resolving relevant issues, opposes any action which may heighten tension, and firmly opposes military conflicts on the peninsula," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily media briefing. "We hope the parties involved will stay calm and restrained."

Ties between the rival Koreas were badly strained after two deadly attacks blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans in 2010.

The Korean Peninsula officially remains at war because an armed conflict in the 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

The latest flare-up in tensions comes as almost all the regional players are consumed with domestic politics. Elections are being held or are expected soon in South Korea, the United States and Japan, while China's Communist Party is in the midst of transferring power to a younger generation of leaders.

Travel Insurance - Medical

I am interested in what the travelers in this group think of travel insurance. I am most interested in protection against medical expenses, including the need to be medically evacuated back to the USA. I am less interested in insuring against things like loss of luggage or being delayed.

Just wondering if anyone has heard of or used what is now called Annual Travel Insurance. Apparently it allows for multiple trips (unlimited) within one year. I think AMX and Travel Guard offers this. I think they allow you to add to basic coverage to insure a higher amount. Thoughts?

Demographic research, brand recognition within the state and other factors make Santa Maria an ideal market for further expansion of the franchised restaurant concept. While the demand for family-friendly eateries continues to grow throughout Santa Maria, providers are limited.

?While there?s definitely a demand for Beef 'O' Brady?s in Santa Maria, we?re taking a careful approach to finding a franchise partner with business savvy, tenacity and a readiness to reinvest in the communities they serve,? said James Walker, Chief Development Officer of Beef 'O' Brady?s. ?To ensure a long, happy partnership, we ensure that our franchise partners meet stringent criteria and share our values.?

The Santa Maria expansion comes just after the launch of several new innovations for Beef 'O' Brady?s, including a lively new franchising website that features interactive, user-friendly tools to guide prospective franchise partners through its proven business model and fun, community-oriented brand culture.

Also new at Beef 'O' Brady?s are fresh Angus Burgers that pack huge flavor and tenderness. A new line of premium Angus Skirt steak options are designed to cure customers? desire for even more beef, and wing lovers have two new dry rubs to cheer about including lemon pepper and Paul Prudhomme?s? Blackened Seasoning. The new lunch menu, which features a renowned emphasis on variety, quality, speed and value, is increasing lunchtime traffic and loyalty amongst customers on the go.

Ironically, despite what its name implies, Beef 'O? Brady?s is best known for its Buffalo chicken wings. Originally, the chain?s menu featured a variety of items that featured beef and a variety of sandwiches. Later, founder Jim Mellody added his own recipe for Buffalo chicken wings, making the restaurant an even ?hotter? place to eat.

DNR's Weekly UP Fishing Report | Sports & Recreation | UP ...

Black River Harbor: ?A few salmon are still being caught below Rainbow Falls.

Ontonagon: ?High winds are keeping boat anglers off the water. A few small salmon were caught in area rivers.

Keweenaw Bay: ?Boat anglers that can get out have caught mostly coho followed by lake trout and steelhead. They did best between Sand Point and Carla?s which is north of Baraga. Those fishing off the rock dock caught coho and steelhead. ? ?

Fall?s River: ?Is producing coho and steelhead for those casting spoons and spinners or drifting crawlers and spawn bags. ? ?

Marquette: ?Surface water temperatures have cooled to the upper 40?s so fishing has improved. Lake trout and steelhead were caught outside the Lower Harbor breakwall and up towards the Carp River. The fish are running three to six pounds. They are staging before the spawn but the run has not peaked yet. Shore anglers are fishing off the Lower Harbor breakwall and from the mouth of the Carp River to the Dead River. A couple nice steelhead were caught off the Upper Harbor breakwall. ?

Carp River: ?Coho action was fair with the occasional fish caught on spoons or spawn. An increase in water levels should increase catch rates. ?

Dead River: ?The salmon run may have peaked as most of the fish in the river appear to be done spawning. Most are using flies. ? ?

Menominee: ?Pier anglers at the marina and the lighthouse caught the occasional salmon but the fish are turning dark. A couple brown trout were caught by those casting spoons or twister tails. Walleye fishing seems to be done. ? ?

Menominee River: ?Walleye fishing was slow. Those targeting smallmouth bass, pike and musky also had reports of slow fishing. Water levels were still low but recent rain may help to bring levels back up. Chinook, pink salmon, steelhead and brown trout were caught near the first dam at Hattie Street. While some are drifting yarn or spawn others are casting spoons, rapalas or twister tails. ?

Little Bay De Noc: ?The Kipling area has been fished the most with perch and walleye caught. Perch anglers were still-fishing with crawlers in four to 10 feet of water around Butler Island but many were small. Walleye anglers did best late evening when trolling or drifting in 10 to 23 feet of water at the Second and Third Reefs. ?

Escanaba River: ?Shore anglers are casting for salmon but few fish were caught. ?

Big Bay De Noc: ? Smallmouth bass by those anchored or drifting with crawlers 25 to 35 feet down between the Bluff and Snail Shell Harbor. ??

St. Mary?s River: ?Those trolling the north end of Munuscong Bay caught a few walleye around Moon Island when trolling crawler harnesses in eight to 12 feet of water. As water temperatures get colder, change to crank baits when targeting walleye in the month of November. A few musky were caught by those trolling eight to 10 inch rubber body shad baits around Tea Cup Island and Kemps Point. Smallmouth bass are excellent around Moon Island when using minnows or jigging with dark green and brown tube jigs. A few yellow perch were caught mid-afternoon across from the Neebish Island Ferry dock or the west side of Neebish Island just off the weed beds. For perch, try out near the red buoy or off Green?s Resort in 12 to 18 feet of water. ??

Detour: ?A few walleye were caught out from the DNR Boat Launch. Anglers are trolling crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers in 12 to 18 feet of water. Around Drummond Island, perch were caught in Scott Bay or try the south side of Ashman Island in eight to 12 feet of water with minnows. A couple perch were also caught near Harbor Island and Bald Island. Good smallmouth bass fishing around Bruce Point. Try minnows or tube jigs in four to eight feet of water around the rock piles. ?

Cedarville and Hessel: ?Anglers are targeting yellow perch in Musky Bay and the Middle Entrance in 10 to 12 feet of water. Most are using minnows. ??

Carp River: ?The pink salmon are almost done but Chinook are moving into the river. ??

Cassette tapes are the future of big data storage

THE cassette tape is about to make a comeback, in a big way. From the updates posted by Facebook's 1 billion users to the medical images shared by healthcare organisations worldwide and the rise of high-definition video streaming, the need for something to store huge tranches of data is greater than ever. And while hard drives have traditionally been the workhorse of large storage operations, a new wave of ultra-dense tape drives that pack in information at much higher densities, while using less energy, is set to replace them.

Researchers at Fuji Film in Japan and IBM in Zurich, Switzerland, have already built prototypes that can store 35 terabytes of data - or about 35 million books' worth of information - on a cartridge that measures just 10 centimetres by 10 cm by 2 cm. This is achieved using magnetic tape coated in particles of barium ferrite.

But the real debut for this technology is likely to be the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the world's largest radio telescope, whose thousands of antennas will be strewn across the southern hemisphere (New Scientist, 2 June, p 4). Once it's up and running in 2024, the SKA is expected to pump out 1 petabyte (1 million gigabytes) of compressed data per day.

Current projections by the trade body Information Storage Industry Consortium show that although hard drives will be able to store 3 terabytes a piece in a decade's time, that still amounts to at least 120,000 drives a year.

That annual archive growth would swamp an experiment that is expected to last decades, says Evangelos Eleftheriou of IBM, who is part of a team working to build tapes for the SKA. By the time the telescope comes online, he and colleagues expect to be able to store 100 terabytes on a cartridge of a similar size to their prototype, by shrinking the width of the recording tracks and using more accurate systems for positioning the read-write heads used to access them.

Using tapes should cut down drastically on energy use, too. Data centres based on disc drive arrays use over 200 times more power than would a tape library of similar size, according to a 2010 study by The Clipper Group, a technology consultancy based in Rye, New Hampshire. That's because disc drives in large arrays tend to remain powered-up, so their platters spin continuously, in case data is required, says Jon Hiles of Spectra Logic, a digital archiving firm in Boulder, Colorado. But tape drives only use power when they are being read or recorded on, he says.

The downside of tapes is that they are slower to access than hard discs because they have to be fetched by a robotic mechanism, inserted in a reader and spooled to the right point. But the Linear Tape File System, which is being developed, expedites this process to make it comparable to disc drives, Eleftheriou says.

As storage needs skyrocket, hard drives won't be able to keep up and keep power down, Eleftheriou says. Density improvements in hard drives are facing physical limits that mean they can only add more power-munching platters. "It's time to take advantage of the low power and low cost of tape," he says.

Let's talk about sex ? Together we can stop it.

Posted on October 18th, 2012

Ellie Hutchinson

Ellie is the Prevention Worker for Scottish Women?s Aid. Her job involves talking to people about domestic abuse and gender inequality, particularly as it relates to young people. She runs the Get Savi bystander programme and co-ordinates the together we can stop it campaign.

We?ve ?just launched a new campaign for young people called ?I get It?. We?re hoping lots of young people will get involved and tell us what a healthy relationships means to them, and why they ?get it?.

Talking about healthy relationships is the flip side to talking about domestic abuse, and is essential from a prevention perspective.?? By highlighting all the fantastically supportive and rewarding ways relationships can work we can begin to create something new. Like any journey, if we don?t know where we want to end up, we won?t get anywhere.

We can say ?don?t control your partner?, ?don?t call them names?, ?don?t coerce them? but what does the opposite look like? What does it feel like? And how would we do this practically?

We?re really excited to start these conversations, with you, our supporters. But we have a problem.

Sex. And more specifically, pleasure.

Many of us are, let?s be honest, pretty rubbish at talking about sex and pleasure. Quite often, we just don?t have the language.

When we don?t talk about sex or pleasure; we?re also not talking about consent, intimacy, or sexual autonomy. Rape myths flourish, children are blamed for the behaviour of men who abuse them, we create shame and taboo around a massive part of human experience, and we create a vacuum of knowledge.

Young people want to talk about this-they?re learning so much new and sometimes scary stuff about relationships, sex, sexuality and their own bodies, they?re actively seeking out this information. If we don?t talk about these issues, misinformation fills in the gaps.? Rape porn, lads mags and celebrity culture fill in the bits that we are too nervous to talk about.? If young people are receiving misinformation, or bad information, they?re not able to make informed choices.

We know there?s a link between unwanted teenage pregnancies, coercion, rape, and the inability to negotiate contraception, and we know a staggering amount of young people experience dating abuse. In a 2009 NUS Survey, 1 in 7 women students had experienced a serious physical or sexual assault during their time as a student and in one American study, 43% of men in college admitted to using coercive behaviour to have sex. Something isn?t working with the way we do things now.

Feedback in schools around sex and relationships education shows that young people want to learn about relationships. For many of them, creep shots are normalised, young women are terrorised online, and whilst a lot of it doesn?t feel?ok, they don?t know that it isn?t.

So, we want to start talking about sex and relationships. What does a relationship mean? Do the same rules apply to a one night stand? A fling? A long term relationship? How about to friendship? ?And what about the rules for boys and girls around sex and relationships? Are they the same?

Starting these conversations, and facilitating this dialogue can help us to create new ways of doing relationships, one that?doesn?t?just feel, but one that is respectful, compassionate, empathetic and fun.

If you?re interested in finding out more about healthy relationships- as a parent, practitioner or young person, check out the campaign blog here, submit your picture, join the conversation and let?s talk about sex.

Effective Ways of Car Wash Business Advertising In order to make sure your car wash business turns into a very profitable venture, it is important to understand how to carry out the advertising part effectively. There are several ways through which you can market your auto detailing business in the right manner. Achieving the right advertisement can lead to money in your pockets.Let us unravel the steps so one can reap maximum profit from your own business venture.

  1. Identify your target clients: It is not only important to start with your car detailing business, but it is equally important to reach out to your vehicle owners. However, you must understand that your average customer is the owner who loves to keep his car regularly maintained and cleaned. Also, research must be done in your business area. It is important to understand if majority of your customers will be male or female as this will help you to create the right variety of advertising materials. If you want to get lady clients, it will definitely require a different set of flyers and techniques when compared to tapping into the male clientele.
  2. Designing your flyers or brochures: When you are creating the flyers and brochures for your business, it is not only important that you provide concise and clear-cut images, but you must also ensure to include incentives which will help in tapping new customers. For instance, you can start with 10-15% discounts for first time clients or scheduling two services at once. This kind of promotion will definitely help you to gain newer customers and retain the current.
  3. Organize a public relations event: The best way to get attention of your customers is to create a public relations event for your business. In this way, you can attract a lot of attention and can get a lot of business as well. Your public relations event can be in the form of a product launch, charity fund raising, sports festival or trade show. Such kind of events will definitely enhance the client base of your business and will also help you in easy lead generation.
  4. Giving out coupons: You can give out coupons for car washes which can be included as a part of grocery store receipts, newspapers and bulk mailers. You can not only create your own coupon campaign but you can also accept other reasonable coupons from your rivals and you can use this to promote your own business. 5. Punch cards: It would be a nice idea to give the patrons of your car wash business a punch card and you can mark every wash on this card. You can evolve a system in which you can allow a free service for the customer after every ten punches. This is an incentive which you will be offering your customers and this will help you to gain your clients loyalty. You must ensure to give quality service to your clients as in this way you can enhance their loyalty towards you.

A car wash business definitely needs to be marketed in the right sense which is the only way the owners can profit from the venture and this type of business is the backbone of the professional auto detailing industry.

Pumping The Brakes - Blogcritics Politics

As the battle between federal regulators and Wall Street financiers rages on, a new player has entered the spotlight in the midst of the great debate over government's involvement in the financial industry. High frequency traders, investors using sophisticated computer programs to rapidly buy and sell securities, have come into the crosshairs of federal authorities after several major incidents where malfunctions caused dramatic fluctuations in share prices on US and European indexes. Advocates for high frequency trading (HFT) argue that regulations impair the ability of financial institutions to produce profits and cut off an important source of liquidity for markets. European regulators have already proposed outright bans for HFT in their financial markets as America's financial watchdogs look for answers to the question, "ban or regulate?" Either way, past glitches in trading software have exposed the volatility created by the excessive automation of HFT techniques undermining much needed investor confidence in US markets. Federal authorities must take immediate action to regulate ?HFT because of its susceptibility to errors in design and execution..?

The Fall Of The Machines??

There are two main concerns regarding high frequency trading:

  • Errors in the programming of high frequency trading systems have caused erratic behavior in the price movements of various asset classes in major stock indexes, increasing market volatility.
  • Increased used of high speed trading methods has added false liquidity and the illusion of volume to securities that have a post-transaction net change near zero.?

On the design error side, three incidents best demonstrate the risks of trading algorithms going haywire: Black Monday, the Flash Crash, and the rescue of Knight Capital Group. ?

The Monday That Lives In Infamy:

  • One of the primary causes of the crash that began on October 19, 1987 was a trading method called "program trading", Like HFT systems today, program trading platforms used computers to make investment decisions based on conditions given by the trader. It was common for institutional investors to place buy/sell orders for a stock or futures contract and then make the opposite call on the underlying stock or derivative. This was done to mitigate portfolio risk by setting up one position to offset potential losses from the other. The increased availability of computer technology made program trading incredibly popular around desks on Wall Street since traders could execute orders with greater accuracy and precision at desired price points.?
  • However, the advance in automation worked against them on that Monday when stock markets in Asia and Europe lost significant value prior to the opening of stock exchanges in the United States. Pre-market declines prompted a sell off on the Dow Jones Industrial Average which deepened once the pre-scheduled trades from program traders hit the market. The computers continued to sell into a depressed market, regardless of the amount of selling that was already happening, a cascading effect that resulted in a 508 point drop on the Dow.?

Gone In 14 Seconds:

  • Around 2:32 P.M. on Thursday May 6, 2010 high frequency trading computers at Waddell & Reed Financial processed a sale order for $4.1 billion worth of futures contracts, selling about 75,000 over 20 minutes of trading. Ordinarily, a sale of this magnitude is spread over five hours to maintain price stability as the value depreciates, but their algorithm was programmed to make the trades without respect to time or the sale price. Once the sale began, the trades were processed regardless of the severity of the declining asset values. High frequency trader in other sectors picked up on the selling activity and thanks to the sell off from Waddell, they were showing excess long positions so they started selling. The selling of outside investors prompted the trading computers at Waddell to sell even more aggressively; to the point where 200 contracts changed hands 27,000 times in just 14 seconds, about 1928 times a second.?
  • The situation worsened when the sell off in futures bled into the equities markets later in the trading day. Investors saw futures for cheap and bought into their sale, but turned and sold off cash shares on the stock exchanges (NYSE, NASDAQ etc.) When it was all said an done, the computer-based sell off in the futures exchanges caused extreme price movements in stocks as companies saw their share prices drop to pennies, or rise to nearly $100,000.00 a share. This volatility in prices continued until stabilizers in the futures exchanges halted trading for 5 seconds to reboot and return prices to appropriate levels.

?If It Walks Like Bear and Talks Like Lehman:

  • Knight Capital Group is a financial services firm that specialized in electronic market making, computerized trading systems, and electronic securities trading. During 30 minutes of the August 12, 2012 trading day, computers at Knight sold off all its investment positions from the previous day. Reports indicate that the trading errors weren't stopped because of a lack of proper oversight capability on the part of Knight and the lack of a termination command for the rogue algorithm or other failsafe. By the time trading ended on Thursday, shares of Knight Capital lost 95% of their value (32% on Wednesday followed by another 63% that Thursday) settling to $2.58 a share. As a result of the trading error, Knight incurred a $440 million loss, far greater than its $289 million in revenue from the previous quarter, and the firm needed emergency capital to open for business the next day. A group of six financiers stepped in to provide Knight the resources it needed to stave off the complete collapse of the firm.?

Kickstart Your Family Tree: Finding Birth Records | Historic ...

Family History Month

As I mentioned in last week?s post, the information provided on census records is not always entirely accurate. Spelling and dates can vary based on the census taker and/or the family member he or she spoke with. One of the most commonly misrepresented facts is a person?s date of birth. It is not uncommon for our ancestors to have different dates of birth listed in different censuses. Because of this, it?s always a good idea to verify this information using another source, and the most reliable source of birth information is a government-issued birth record.

As with most historical data, the availability of these records varies greatly from state to state and even county to county. This article will focus on birth records for the state of Indiana. For more information about finding birth records in other states, contact that state?s Department of Health.

?About Birth Records in Indiana

Indiana law did not require births to be reported to the State Department of Health until 1907. Before that, births were recorded only with the local health department in the county where the birth occurred, if they were recorded at all. The majority of births prior to 1882 were not officially recorded by any governing body.

?Accessing Birth Records

To obtain a certified copy of a birth record, Indiana law requires that you meet certain restrictions based on your relationship to the person whose record you are requesting. More information regarding these restrictions can be found on the ISDH website.

Birth records after 1907 can be requested through the Indiana State Department of Health?s Vital Records Office via mail or phone (they no longer offer walk-in service). Records prior to 1907 must be requested through the applicable county office (see a list of contact information for all county offices).?Fees range usually range from $5.00 to $15.00 per record.

Keep in mind that although plenty of websites offer vital records services at an array of price points, in nearly every case you?ll get more reliable and less expensive service by contacting the above mentioned offices directly.

?What You?ll Find

Birth records offer more information than just our ancestor?s date and place of birth. Often, though not always, you will also find the following information about the individual?s parents:

  • their full names (including the mother?s maiden name)
  • their ages at the time of the birth
  • their birthplaces
  • their occupations
  • the number of children the mother has had, and the number of those children living at the time
Using a Birth Index

While obtaining a government-issued birth record may be the preferred route, it is not always a viable option. When this is the case, you may find a birth index to be a helpful tool.

Birth Index

Index from Connecticut listing the birth of my 4th Great-Grandfather, Stephen Longwell

Birth indices have been used by genealogists for decades. They provide a much more accessible source of birth information and often consolidate data from multiple original sources.

However, there are a few downsides to using indices. Because they are another step removed from the original document, there is more room for human error. Also, they rarely contain as much information as the original documents. For instance, while an official birth record may contain all the information mentioned above, an index listing that same birth may only have the birth dates and the parents? names.

There are two main indices of Indiana births. The first was created by the Works Projects Administration and compiles county birth records ranging from 1880-1920. Unfortunately, the agency was abolished before the indexing project was completed, so only 68 counties are indexed. The index can be accessed in print at the Indiana State Library. Part of the index has been digitized and can be accessed at Ancestry.com (available for free at several area libraries). Follow the link to see a list of counties available online.

The second large-scale indexing project that was done for the state of Indiana, is Pre-1882 Indiana Births from Secondary Sources, Vols. I & II. This index was compiled by Dawne Slater-Putt, CG, in 1999 and includes information from a variety of secondary sources. You can access the index by visiting the William H. Smith Memorial Library?at the?Indiana Historical Society, the Indiana State Library, or any of the many other libraries in the state that hold a copy.

In addition to these two large indices, many counties have created smaller-scale indices of the births that occurred in or around their county. To find out if an index exists for the county you are researching, contact the local library or simply search their catalog.

Discovering birth information is not always easy, but it is often the only way to move forward with your family history. So use one of the methods discussed above and see what information you can discover!
