Linda Connelly, a Hilo assistant professor in pharmaceutical sciences was awarded a grant from the Hawai?i Community Foundation for breast cancer research. Connelly was awarded $50,000 from the Robert C. Perry Fund to study the role of endogenous osteoprotegerin expression in breast cancer metastasis.

Connelly?s research focus is on the molecular basis of primary tumor growth and metastasis, primarily in breast cancer, including investigating the role of macrophages and inflammatory signaling molecules in tumor progression.

Connelly teaches the pathophysiology course in the College of Pharmacy and is the course coordinator for the pre-pharmacy program courses. She received her bachelor?s degree with honors, first class, in biochemistry with work placement from the University of Glasgow and her PhD in molecular pharmacology from the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research, University College London.

I had met Jose only once before, when I took him out for coffee and tried to persuade him to write for the magazine not long after his profile of Mark Zuckerberg was published in The New Yorker. I hadn?t heard from him since. So, to be honest, I didn?t think much of that first e-mail and didn?t expect anything to come of it when I dutifully called Jose the next day. (?Urgent and personal? stories have a way of not panning out.) That?s when things got mysterious.

The phone call was short. Jose seemed nervous. He asked if I had talked to Peter Baker (a White House correspondent for The Times and a contributing writer to the magazine who is also a former colleague of Vargas?s at The Washington Post). Not much later, Jose told me he had to talk to his lawyers and then hung up.

Like a good journalist, I picked up the phone and called Peter. When we connected on Wednesday morning, Peter was less confused than I was, but he was uncertain as to whether Jose?s phone call gave him dispensation to tell me what in the world this was all about. That afternoon, Peter called back with the news: Jose Antonio Vargas is an illegal immigrant. He had been planning to tell his story in The Washington Post, but for reasons unknown to him, The Post killed his story on Monday.

The magazine closes on Friday, and so my first instinct, to be honest, was to start brainstorming with Peter about what other section of The Times might want Jose?s story. (Would it be good for the first edition of the new Sunday Review?) But as we talked, Peter kept dropping fascinating details ? for example, Jose came to this country when he was 12, and he didn?t find out he was undocumented until he went to the D.M.V. when he was 16.

Without having seen the story, I walked into the office of Joel Lovell, one of the magazine?s deputy editors, and closed the door. I told him that Jose Antonio Vargas is an illegal immigrant and that he has a 4,000-word article that tells his story. Should we think about tearing up the book, as we say in the business? (I should emphasize that this is something we almost never do. To my knowledge, it hasn?t happened, at least this late in the week, in my two and a half years at the magazine.)

Joel thought we should. So the two of us walked into the office of Lauren Kern, the magazine?s other deputy editor, and closed the door. Not long after that, there were three of us walking into the office of Hugo Lindgren, the editor of the magazine. Sure, Hugo said, let?s see the piece. And if we don?t want it, surely we can give it to someone else at the paper.

So I called Peter and told that we wanted to see Jose?s story, but if there was any chance of closing it in time ? of editing it, fact-checking it, photographing Jose, designing it, etc. ? we needed to see it right now. Just before 5 p.m., 48 hours before the magazine is supposed to close, Jose e-mailed me a draft of the story.

And within a hour, we decided this wasn?t a story we were going to give to anyone else. Sometimes great stories fall into your lap, as Hugo just told The Huffington Post.

I e-mailed Carlos Lozada, the editor of The Washington Post?s ?Outlook? section that originally assigned Jose?s story, and told him I would be writing this blog post. I asked him if he wanted to comment. He replied:

Jose Antonio Vargas did approach us with this idea some time ago, and I worked with him on the story for some weeks, with the intention of running it in Outlook. In the end, a decision was made here to pass on it. I?m delighted that the author found such a great home for the piece in the Sunday Magazine at The Times ? certainly a fine second choice after The Washington Post Outlook section.

PIMCO's El-Erian predicts Greece, others will default (Reuters)

TAIPEI (Reuters) ? The head of PIMCO, the world's biggest bond fund, predicted that Greece and other European economies would default on their debts to resolve their problems as the euro area deals with its debt crisis.

Greece's government won a vote of confidence late on Tuesday, a crucial step toward securing further short-term and longer-term financial aid from the European Union and the IMF as the country tries to avoid the euro zone's first sovereign debt default.

"For the next three years, we're going to see different economies work out different problems. For European economies, especially Greece, it would be through default," Mohamed El-Erian, chief executive of PIMCO, told reporters in Taipei on Wednesday via a video conference.

He didn't identify which economies other than Greece he was referring to.

El-Erian has suggested in the past that Greece would default and that Europe risks wasting money for nothing by pumping billions of dollars into the ailing economy.

"Nothing has been done to enhance growth," he said. "No single (Greek) indicator has shown strength. They are afraid a restructuring would hurt European banks."

He doubted a Greek default could trigger another global financial crisis.

"Ireland, Portugal, Italy and Spain would have to be involved. But Greece is too small in terms of economic impact," El-Erian said.

PIMCO, or the Pacific Investment Management Co, is based in California and is the world's biggest bond fund manager with nearly $1.3 trillion in assets under management.

Horacio Valeiras, chief investment officer of fund firm Allianz Global Investors Capital (AGIC), predicted that Ireland and Portugal, countries that also received financial bailouts in the wake of the global credit crisis, will have to restructure their debts.

PIMCO and AGIC are units of German insurer Allianz, which organised briefings for the media and investors.

"We are not investing in Greece, Ireland, Spain and Portugal," said Valeiras, who appeared in person at the press briefing. He said default in Greece was "inevitable".

The confidence vote in Athens came after a European ultimatum requiring the debt-choked state to agree to a five-year austerity package of measures within the next two weeks or miss out on a 12-billion euro tranche of aid money.

Without the loan, Athens will run out of cash next month and policymakers fear a default would send shockwaves through the global financial system.

European officials are also considering a second bailout package worth an estimated 120 billion euros that is meant to extend Greece's year-old 110 billion euro deal and fund it into 2014.

Sovereign debt elsewhere in the developed world has also soared since the global crisis, affecting investment decisions.

The fiscal weight of the global financial crisis prompted PIMCO to dump U.S. sovereign bonds. The fund's $236.9 billion PIMCO Total Return Fund said in March it had completed a move in February to drop all its investments in U.S. government debt.

Earlier this month, Tomoya Masanao, the head of Japan portfolio management for PIMCO, said the fund manager had cut holdings of Japanese and U.S. government debt to shift money into more attractive investments, such as debt issued by the likes of Australia, Canada, Brazil and Mexico.

As police continue to investigate the fiery car crash that took the life of "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn on Monday, a West Goshen Police Department dispatcher confirmed to MTV News on Tuesday morning (June 21) that an autopsy is under way on the body of the 34-year-old TV personality and amateur stuntman. It was unknown at press time when the autopsy results would be revealed.

The police source also confirmed the name of the passenger who was killed in the wreck, 30-year-old Zachary Hartwell of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Though Hartwell was not a member of the "Jackass" crew, he is listed as a production assistant on the second "Jackass" movie and was reportedly a recently married Iraq war veteran who had a small role in the Bam Margera-directed 2009 movie "Minghags." Hartwell is credited on IMDb as a "car stunt driver" on the film.

According to TMZ, the autopsy is intended to determine if alcohol, among other things, played a factor in the high-speed crash. The one-car accident took place around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, and according to police, Dunn's 2007 Porsche 911 GTS flew through 40 yards of trees before it hit one and burst into flames. The initial police press release reported that the "preliminary investigation revealed that speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident."

A series of images surfaced online of Dunn drinking at the West Chester bar Barnaby's of America in the hours before the accident, but a spokesperson for the tavern told MTV News on Monday that Dunn did not appear intoxicated before he left the establishment.

Film critic and frequent Twitter user Roger Ebert weighed in on the controversy surrounding Dunn's death on Monday, writing, "Friends don't let Jackasses drink and drive," an assumption that angered Dunn's friends and fans. Dunn's close friend Margera — who like the rest of the "Jackass" crew was devastated by their friend's death — was incensed by the tweet, responding, "I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of sh-- Roger Ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents ... about a Jackass drunk driving and his is one, f--- you! Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat f---ing mouth!"

Dunn was remembered by his friends and co-stars in a statement posted by Johnny Knoxville, producer Jeff Tremaine and the entire "Jackass" family. "I don't really know what to say right now everybody, because the sadness is overwhelming, but today we lost one of our own. Our brother Ryan Dunn has passed. He died in a car wreck in West Goshen, Pennsylvania this morning at 3 a.m. Goddamn, that's tough to write," the statement read. "Our hearts go out to his family and his beloved Angie. Ryan will be missed and remembered by us all. Thanks for the kind words of support everybody."

The study?s revised estimates disclosed that in a financial crisis, donations were less than $10 billion in 2008 to $299.8 billion. It was down to $280.3 billion in 2009.

Philanthropy Center?s executive director Patrick Rooney said 2010 inflation-adjusted donations have increased by 2.1%. But he said the sobering reality is that many nonprofits are still hurting, and if giving continues to grow at that rate, it will take 5-6 more years just to return to the level of giving before the Great Recession. According to the study, assistance from about 75 million households, 1.5 million corporations, about 120,000 estates and 77,000 foundations goes to over 1.2 million registered charities and about 350,000 American religious flocks. Individual giving rose to $211.7 billion (2.7% up) while charitable donations at $22.8 billion were 19% higher. Corporate giving was up 10% at $15 billion, foundation giving meanwhile remained at $41 billion.

Giving USA Foundation?s chairwoman Edith Falk said that gains in giving suggest philanthropic growth may slow over the next several years and recession-like donor actions may continue. She said more corporations focus philanthropy on organizations and causes that closely align with their missions and values. Foundations have been reluctant to take on new programs or fund new organizations, she added. About 33% of donations are received by religious groups, 14% to education, 11% to foundations, 9% to human services, 8% for health and 8% for public society groups. Arts & culture groups together with international affairs with relief, development and public policy initiatives get 5%. Environmental and animal groups, and for individuals, each get 5% and a remaining 1% goes to an uncategorized sector.

The rest of the photo album, titled ?Governor and Ambassador,? contains several images of Mr. Huntsman chatting with members of the U.S. military or posing in front of military aircraft, and only three photos ? including two of him on a bicycle in Beijing ? that obviously place him in China.

The photos in the Facebook album are offered without captions, leaving observers to guess at their meaning. But the image of Mr. Huntsman smiling and shaking hands with the Dalai Lama ? a man who gives Beijing fits ? seems clearly intended as a signal that the ex-ambassador isn?t afraid to irritate his former hosts.

Given the importance of the U.S.-China relationship to Beijing, and the potential implications for that relationship of a former ambassador becoming head honcho in Washington, the lack of commentary on Mr. Huntsman?s candidacy is curious to say the least.

One explanation could lie in the sensitivity surrounding Mr. Huntsman?s tenure in Beijing. Despite seeming to have developed a good working relationship with the country?s leaders early on, Mr. Huntsman lost much of that political capital in February after he was spotted outside a McDonald?s in Beijing where activists had urged people to start a ?Jasmine Revolution.?

The incident sparked a flurry of angry commentary and, for some time after, searches for Mr. Huntsman?s name on popular microblogging sites were blocked. With the Huntsman name thus sullied in the eyes of China?s propaganda authorities, Chinese media may be waiting for the official OK before weighing in on his campaign.

Alternately, the Chinese press might simply not be all that interested in a candidate who recently polled a distant second to Rep. Ron Paul at the Republican Leadership Conference and whose reputation as a moderate makes him a long shot to win the GOP nomination.

Indeed, to the extent that Chinese newspapers have offered analysis of the campaign, most have repeated the speculation already prevalent in U.S. media that Mr. Huntsman is running now not to win, but to raise his profile for a more serious try in 2016.

Finally, it?s possible that Mr. Huntsman?s tumultuous exit from Beijing ? which included public feuding over meetings canceled in the wake of his ?Jasmine Revolution? appearance -? has left Chinese media feeling little love for the man they?d once lauded for speaking their language.

Among the only mainstream writers to offer even the semblance of an opinion, positive or negative, on the implications for China of a Huntsman White House run was Feng Difan, who in an essay for China Business News (in Chinese) briefly pondered Mr. Huntsman?s fluent Mandarin:

?It?s worth noting, Hong Bopei?s Mandarin abilities have often been seen as an advantage in his diplomatic interactions with China,? he wrote. ?Of course, as an anonymous member of the China diplomatic scene told this reporter, being able to speak Mandarin and being able to understand China are not the same thing.?
