Colorado Man Busted; Bombs-for-Drugs Deal Alleged

A Colorado man who claimed to be a former demolition expert in the U.S. Marines was arrested Thursday after he allegedly tried to trade guns and homemade bombs with a 20-meter "kill zone" for cocaine.

Richard Lawrence Sandberg, 35, was taken into custody Thursday at his Morrison, Colo. home, ATF spokesman Bradley Beyersdorf told ABC News. Sandberg is facing one count of unlawful possession of a firearm or explosive device.

According to court documents, police became aware of Sandberg on January 18, when a confidential informant told a Denver police detective that Sandberg wanted to trade "numerous firearms and grenades" for drugs. The Denver police detective then contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

On Tuesday, the documents say, an undercover ATF agent met with Sandberg at his home.

Sandberg allegedly told the undercover agent that he was in possession of 18 M67 military grenades that he offered to sell for $200 to $300 a piece, according to the criminal complaint.

The complaint did not say where Sandberg may have gotten the grenades, but said "Sandberg claimed to have been active in war zones in Iraq, Somalia, Africa, and Pakistan."

"Sandberg also stated that he was in possession of several thousand rounds of ammunition and also in possession of uranium-tipped armor-piercing ammunition," the complaint said.

In addition to the grenades, Sandberg allegedly claimed to have about a dozen homemade bombs, called "frags," designed to create a "kill zone" within 20 meters and a "hurt zone" within 60 meters if they went off. The complaint says Sandberg also claimed to have access to C4 plastic explosives and napalm.

In one conversation, Sandberg "made disparaging remarks about the current administration and them wanting to take away his guns," according to the complaint.

If any law enforcement officers tried to take his guns, the complaint says Sandberg told the agent that "it would be a bad day for them and lots of them would die. Sandberg stated that he was ready and willing to die."

At one point, the undercover ATF agent offered to pay for pipe bombs and a small explosive called a "cricket." Sandberg refused, the complaint says, instead insisting that "they could set up a trade for cocaine."

During the Thursday operation, the street in front of Sandberg's home was blocked for several hours while ATF agents and three local bomb squads made sure the house was safe. Multiple improvised explosive devices were taken from the house and rendered safe at a remote location, according to U.S. Attorney's spokesman Jeffrey Dorchner.

One house next door to Sandberg's had to be temporarily evacuated, Beyersdorf said.

Sandberg appeared in federal court Thursday afternoon and was advised of the charges against him. He has not entered a plea. Sandberg is being held without bond until a detention hearing scheduled for Jan. 29, Dorchner said.

PFT: Jets unlikely to add Vick, may target Jackson

HarbaughGetty Images

Well, the New Orleans airport workers won?t have a chance to egg the Falcons? bus, after all.

For the second straight week, the Falcons blew a big lead.? Unlike last week against the Seahawks, they were unable to come back and win.

After the 49ers took their first lead of the game with 8:23 to play, the Falcons moved the ball in position to go ahead again, fueled by a decision on replay review to uphold a catch by receiver Harry Douglas, who could have scored if he hadn?t stumbled.? The ball appeared to both move and touch the ground, but it was determined to be a catch ? prompting a full-body heave from coach Jim Harbaugh.

Still, the 49ers stiffened, stopping the Falcons on fourth and four with less than two minutes to play.? Along the way, quarterback Matt Ryan landed hard on his left arm after throwing a pass.? He was clearly bothered by an apparent injury to his shoulder/collarbone for the rest of the game.

The Falcons forced a punt, but Frank Gore gave the 49ers some breathing room and the Falcons simply didn?t have enough time to mount a scoring drive.? Ryan?s injury may have prevented him cranking up a deep pass to the end zone, which could prompt some to question whether a backup quarterback should have been used for the last play.

Regardless, the 49ers are going to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1994.? And Jim Harbaugh has finally finished the business that began the following year, when his Colts nearly beat the Steelers for a berth in Super Bowl XXX.

And there?s also a chance that Jim Harbaugh will be facing his big brother in the Big Easy, if the Ravens beat the Patriots.

Though we?re officially objective, the idea of two brothers squaring off in the Super Bowl is a storyline worth rooting for.

Marketing Biz: Identity Capture, Link Rot & Graph Search

Facebook?s new Graph Search was the attention getting headline this week and for good reason. But there were also a number of reorganizations (perhaps the first of many New Year?s resolutions) including StumbleUpon layoffs, Patch?s community pivot, Advance Publications? purchase of Pop and a new advertising hire for Bazaarvoice.

New funding for Janrain and Curalate also returned attention to compelling trends for marketers to watch from social identity capture to the high rate of link rot.?

This is ? Marketing Biz.

Janrain Sign In Options

Since 2008, Janrain customers have been able to use social login to better understand their website users.? The company?s Janrain User Management Platform (JUMP) provides a single, unified view of users across multiple online properties and social identities.? The third and latest generation of its industry-leading user management solution is the first to integrate profile data with a broad array of component technologies such as email marketing tools, ecommerce platforms and personalization engines.

That?s a pretty ominous headline isn?t it? Identity capture! But Janrain has been providing a social login solution for years and users are finally beginning to catch up and trust these social logins more often. So of course Janrain is looking to the next thing, using and mining that login data for those sites. Smart, but a bit creepy too.

Advance Publications, parent company of Conde Nast and magazines like Wired, Vogue and Vanity Fair, has acquired Pop, a digital ad agency based in Seattle.

?Pop and Advance see the opportunity to continue the transition they are in the process of making from a traditional media company to a digital media company,? said Pop CEO and founder Bill Predmore. ?One thing I hope we can do together is help them make that transition with the numerous brands in the family.?

Traditional media companies have long seen the light but have waited on the sidelines, thinking they had more time to ?go digital?. But digital media publications are flourishing while many long standing traditional publications are being shuttered. Advance has actually been more forward thinking than many but this clearly signals an acceleration of plans to stake out their share of the digital landscape.

Curalate Analytics

Curalate provides both analytics and marketing tools. It tells brands which pinned content referred what traffic, and helps them run Pinterest contests.

CEO Apu Gupta says the company?s approach of using image recognition is better than those of keyword-based competitors, because only 10 percent of Pinterest posts include the name of a brand explicitly. Plus, as much as 48 percent of the most popular Pinterest pins are linked to expired pages on retailers? sites.

I hope that Curalate isn?t solely focused on Pinterest because I like the product concept and wouldn?t want them to hitch their wagon to a site versus a general image based curation trend. The statistic here about the number of broken links is staggering. The rate of link rot on the Internet is increasing and smart marketers should monitoring this issue to ensure the efficiency and longevity of those content assets.

There will be ?as much and more quality original content,? Webster said, though ?content? will mean not only reported stories but also community conversations as encouraged by the new platform. Running a community hub, Webster said, is ?definitely going to be a big part of what our editors do.?

The promise of hyperlocal content just hasn?t come to fruition. The opportunity is there but I don?t think this is the way to get there. Throwing community conversations and user generated content aggregation into the mix seems like a step back, not a step forward. Already a target for link spam, Patch will have serious issues around community management that just can?t be scaled with ease.

Facebook Graph Search Example

Graph Search and web search are very different. Web search is designed to take a set of keywords (for example: ?hip hop?) and provide the best possible results that match those keywords. With Graph Search you combine phrases (for example: ?my friends in New York who like Jay-Z?) to get that set of people, places, photos or other content that?s been shared on Facebook. We believe they have very different uses.

For years I?ve been predicting that Facebook would get into search and when they did it might not look the way we expected. Sure enough, Facebook finally did do something about search and it wasn?t at all what I was expecting. I don?t see this as a Google competitor but instead puts it firmly in competition with local recommendation engines like Yelp and Foursquare.

I?m not the biggest Facebook fan but there?s a lot to like here if you?ve invested in building a Facebook network. And for those who haven?t it might drive user re-engagement and reconfiguration which would benefit all ad targeting products.

Now that 40 percent of StumbleUpon?s traffic is from mobile devices, he said, a ?rebalancing? of the engineering team was in order. While the bulk of today?s layoffs impacted non-technical company divisions such as marketing and community, some desktop-focused engineers were also let go.

StumbleUpon is one of the least understood marketing platforms. They have simply never made a clear case to marketers as to the real value of those 1.03 page views per visit visits (say that three times fast!) So the layoff in marketing is a poor signal in my view. Would it kill you to do some multi-funnel attribution studies StumbleUpon?

Today, we?re expanding the program by adding nine members that address challenges we continue to hear often from publishers and brands, particularly around engagement and analytics.

Marketers should be pleased that Twitter is actively addressing the need for third-party tools to manage and analyze their efforts on Twitter. Overall, Twitter has largely moved from a developer friendly focus to a marketing friendly focus. This makes complete sense in their move to become a brand advertising platform.?

Crowdbooster Logo

As Crowdbooster has become mission-critical to many of you, we started falling behind on our promise to give you the highest quality service and we hated it. Instead of the unsustainable freemium model, we?ve decided to charge a low monthly price of $9 for the currently free service. This freedom will allow us to innovate faster (like our new export feature) and provide you an even better service.?We think great analytics can be a difference maker in how we learn to communicate and tell stories using social media.

I like Crowdbooster but do I like it enough to fork over $9 a month? I would have liked to have seen more development on the platform prior to the change. Are you planning on becoming a paid subscriber?

Last year, Bazaarvoice, which helps e-commerce companies manage customer reviews, got into the media business by?buying Longboard Media, which helps the same companies run and target ads.

Ari Paparo is best known for his time at DoubleClick and could certainly bring interesting skills and connections to Bazaarvoice?s advertising integration plans. I still see review identity as an opportunity that would bring interest from a number of partners, most notably Google.

Reachli now has access to images on the websites of more than 700 publishers. The company?s algorithms identify categories of images and suggest them to advertisers. Then, advertisers can buy an ad for the image that is basically a text link that appears when a user rolls over the image with their cursor. The idea is that the link will direct users to something relevant to the image ? a home goods sale if it?s a photo of an interior, for example.

I?m a big fan of images as a way to communicate on the Internet. But I?m not sure that the context of images is always right for these text ads. It?s worth a test but as many retailers have found out the hard way, image traffic can often be far less valuable. It?s the difference between a window browser and a shopper.

Make your own emails mobile-friendly

The underlying trend for all of these emails is that they?re concise and they have a clear call-to-action. Someone who?s just glancing through their inbox on their phone can still get the message and easily take action.

Keeping emails short and visual is going to be increasingly important as smartphones become the norm among both your customers and supporters, so it may be time to start thinking about how you can design your own emails in a way that makes them fun, engaging, and mobile-friendly.

Adviser hails 'Abenomics,' says dollar can rise

Koichi Hamada, professor emeritus of economics at Yale University, speaks at a press conference in Tokyo Friday, Jan. 18, 2013. (AP) ? The expert behind the monetary policies of Japan's new prime minister welcomed the recovering stock market and favorable exchange rate as signs of success Friday, and said the dollar can rise to 110 yen before excessive inflation risks kick in.

Koichi Hamada, professor emeritus of economics at Yale University, is the brain behind the "Abenomics" of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, elected late last year, who has been pressuring the Bank of Japan to set an inflation target to fight deflation.

Although the Bank of Japan has not yet taken any action, Abe's pronouncements have been enough to lift the benchmark Nikkei and the dollar higher.

On Friday the dollar rose above 90 yen for the first time since June 2010. That's up from the 80 yen levels prior to Abe's election. It had traded below 80 yen during much of last year. A weak yen makes Japan's imports more expensive but is a boon for its exporters. The Nikkei 225 has gained almost 11 percent since the Jan. 16 election.

"The proof is in the pudding. Evidence is stronger than any talk," said Hamada, recently appointed adviser to Abe's Cabinet.

Hamada's views, while shared by many economists around the world, is based on the idea that moderately rising prices are good for growth, and that Japan's big problem is deflation, or continuously plunging prices. Japan's economy has been in the doldrums for the past two decades after its 1980s bubble economy turned sour.

Hamada's proposals, which encourage the printing of more money, also help export-dependent economies such as Japan by lowering their currencies.

Japan's automakers and electronics makers have been at a huge disadvantage compared to their South Korean rivals because, as the yen surged 20 percent in recent years, the won fell 40 percent, according to Hamada.

"If the dollar goes above 110 yen, there may be reason for worry, but at 100 yen or 95 yen, it's OK," he said at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo.

Hamada, who often advises Abe through telephone calls and memos, argued growth was being held down by failed monetary policies, and Japan can get back on a recovery track with the right measures.

He was less bullish about Abe's generous spending packages and urged that stimulus money go into fixing faulty bridges and rebuilding in the tsunami disaster zone, not pork-barrel construction as in the past.

When asked about Abe's nationalistic views, which are likely to anger China and other Asian neighbors, Hamada said he hoped to exchange views with the leader's political advisers to ensure the best for the Japanese people. He did not give details, stressing his expertise was economics.

Abe has promised to take a more assertive diplomatic stance and foster patriotism, moves that may seek to sugar-coat Japan's World War II atrocities and could intensify regional territorial disputes.

NEW YORK, Jan. 17, 2013: TheBump.com Reveals Top Pregnancy ...

-- Leading Pregnancy and Parenting Website Predicts Royal Baby Fever, Breastfeeding Boom, 50 Shades of Green Names and More for 2013 Pregnancies --

? /PRNewswire/ --?Updated -- TheBump.com, the fastest-growing pregnancy and parenting website, today released its predictions for the hottest pregnancy trends for 2013. From neon accents in the nursery and royal baby frenzy to shades of green names, moms-to-be will have plenty of trends to jump on this year.

(Logo:? http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120618/MM26636LOGO-c )

"Whether it's taking a mommymoon with friends, hosting an at-home ultrasound party or throwing a postbirth bash for friends and family to meet the new arrival, pregnancies are more celebrated now than ever," says Carley Roney, cofounder and editor in chief of TheBump.com. "It's an extremely exciting time in a woman's life, and today's mamas-to-be are fully embracing ways of sharing their bliss with others."

Here's What's Trending for 2013:

Royal Baby Fever The arrival of Kate Middleton and Prince William's new baby will no doubt be the biggest birth of the year. Just as wedding dress designers started creating replicas of Kate's gown the second she stepped out of the car on her wedding day, we'll see maternity clothing designers quickly incorporating her bump style into their collections and moms-to-be flocking to emulate her pregnancy look. Regal baby gear and decor will also make its way into stores and commoners' hands. Once the royal babe arrives, his or her style, gear and name will be obsessed over and copied.

From 50 Shades of Green to Downton Abbey Domination Celebs have been naming their babies after hues of the rainbow for years, but with emerald being the Pantone color of the year, our bet's on naming babies after shades of green?think Hunter, Kelly, Jade, Fern and Forest. After all, Drew Barrymore did name her baby girl Olive in 2012. What's out in 2013? Naming your baby after a city, like Brooklyn, Paris or Austin. This year, moms will take a cue from Reese Witherspoon, who last year named her baby boy Tennessee, and try Georgia, Virginia, Carolina or even Montana. Also on the rise this year are popular names from the beginning of the 20th century. Due to the Downton Abbey craze, more babies will be sporting names like Mary, Edith, Anna, Robert and Thomas.

More Moms Whipping 'Em Out With rates on the rise and an outbreak of media attention on the topic in 2012, we can only predict an even bigger increase in breastfeeding (especially in public!) for 2013. From the Time magazine cover shot of a mom nursing her three-year-old son and NYC's "Latch On NYC" program that discourages formula use in hospitals to TheBump.com Public Display of Breastfeeding Day, where moms across the country nursed in public, the act has received major support that is sure to continue this year. Celeb moms such as Pink, Miranda Kerr, Ali Landry, Hilary Duff and Gwen Stefani are also big advocates. Another plus: Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are now required to cover breast pumps and visits to lactation consultants at no cost to the patient. Here's to more moms whipping 'em out in 2013!

Social Sharing Sooner Moms are taking a cue from the recent flurry of celebs, including Kate Middleton and Jessica Simpson, whose pregnancies were announced earlier than usual. Blame it on the trend of oversharing on social media or on a friend outing you at the office, but women today are announcing sooner than the standard 12 weeks to their close friends and family. In fact, a poll on TheBump.com showed that 58% of pregnant women let the cat out of the bag before the 12-week mark.

Mommymoons You've heard of the babymoon and even the daddymoon, but mommymoons are becoming increasingly popular, with expectant moms indulging in a little R&R before the baby arrives. Whether it involves taking a beach getaway with fellow expecting mamas, shutting off for the weekend at a spa resort or hosting an at-home mani-pedi party and prenatal yoga class with friends, pregnant moms are finding ways to enjoy some "me" time before middle-of-the-night feedings and diaper changes become routine.

Neon in the Nursery 2012 saw a plethora of neon on the runways, and now energizing colors are making their way into the nursery. Don't expect cribs in highlighter yellow or electric-blue walls, but parents will be sure to embrace a basic palette with fluorescent pops of color. From hot-pink chevron pillows to neon-orange wall art, subtle accents in energizing hues will be brightening nurseries everywhere.

Baby Shower v. Baby Bash On its way out are the days of baby showers for baby number two, three and more. 2013 will be the year of the "sip and see": a postbirth bash hosted by the parents where friends and family stop by the house, sip some drinks and see the newborn. Baby showers for second and third babies are always a debated topic, but with a sip and see, parents can easily celebrate the birth of the new one and not have guests feel obligated to show up with a must-have baby item.?

Raising the Bar on the Sex Reveal The trend of revealing your baby's gender has gone beyond cutting a cake to discover pink or blue filling. In 2013, parents are pulling out all the stops to create a gender reveal that's truly memorable for their friends and family. From sending personal boxes filled with pink or blue helium balloons to making a "Gangnam Style" gender-reveal dance video, parents are getting creative when announcing the sex. Another big trend this year in gender reveals: the ultrasound party. Yes, expecting parents are inviting friends and family to view a live ultrasound conducted by a technician right in their very own living room.

Australian riders are ''deceived, annoyed, frustrated''

ADELAIDE (Reuters) - Former Tour de France stage winner Stuart O'Grady said he was "deceived, annoyed, frustrated" by Lance Armstrong's doping confession on Friday after interrupting his preparations for the Tour Down Under to watch the American's television interview.

The first race of the elite UCI pro tour season begins this weekend and there was only one topic of conversation at the village in Adelaide which houses the teams - Armstrong's confessional broadcast with chat-show host Oprah Winfrey.

In it, the American ended years of vehement denial by finally coming clean and admitting he had cheated his way to a record seven Tour de France titles with systematic use of banned, performance-enhancing drugs.

"Lance deceived everybody on the planet, us included," said Australian O'Grady, 39, who now rides for the Greenedge Orica team.

"So obviously we all wanted to believe also he was winning the Tours clean. We are all athletes suffering through the mountains and you'd like to think that he was just training harder and working harder than we all were.

"But now it's all come out...deceived, annoyed, frustrated. It'll be interesting to see what he comes out in the second part and says but I don't think anything is going to take that away."

The second part of Armstrong's confessional will be broadcast on Saturday Australian time and analysis of the first part of the interview continued throughout the day.

"It wasn't a deep and sincere apology if that's what we're looking for, it certainly wasn't that," said cycling commentator Phil Liggett, who was once a staunch supporter of Armstrong and spoke at events organized by the American's Livestrong charity.

"And, I really do feel that he has to name names. He doesn't seem to realize the incredulous crime that he's committed.

"It's almost as if he thinks, well, nobody really noticed. But of course the world, it's the biggest thing in sport we've ever seen.

"For Lance, as he said, it'll go on for the rest of his life but we need to know how, why and with whom," added the Briton, who has covered 40 Tours de France.

Liggett said some good could come out of the scandal.

"I think the best thing to come out of the whole business of Armstrong and his team is that it's all in the open now and that the kids of today haven't got to take needles to their arms to win bike races and that's what's most important," he said.

Armstrong's compatriot Tim Duggen said the culture in American cycling had already changed.

"For me in my generation it never was an option to dope," the 30-year-old Team Saxo-Tinkoff rider said.

"It was always part of the mentality and the culture to race clean. So I hope Lance's confession brings some closure to the matter and to the year and that now the focus can be on the current generation of riders who are doing it right."

Armstrong launched his comeback at the 2009 Tour Down Under and returned to Australia for the following two years to compete in the race.

Race director Mike Turtur said that despite the scandal, the sport, and his event in particular, was strong enough to survive.

"We can't change history, I mean what's happened ," said Turtur.

"The race is big enough, strong enough and been around now for 15 years. I think the race is developed to a level now where it's well known throughout the world and the riders enjoy coming here and I think we present a good product and I'm just excited about the race moving forward."

The Tour Down Under starts with a 51-km circuit race in Adelaide on Sunday and concludes on January 27 after a total distance of 758.5 km over six stages.

Armstrong, meanwhile, faces the prospect of multi-million-dollar lawsuits but Liggett appealed for some perspective on the scandal.

"At the end of the day he's cheated in a game," he said. "He's not a rapist, he's not a murderer, so the sentences can't possibly be longer than for people of that tendency. And, so yes, if he comes clean then his sentence should be reduced."

How To Pick The Right House To Buy | The White Cube Real Estate

Those that are inexperienced in purchasing real estate and even old pros can benefit from learning. Of particular interest is how to invest without incurring too much financial risk. Here are some ideas to help you on your way with real estate.

When looking to purchase a new home, it is very important to avoid the trap of judging a house based on its decor. You should base your decision on the condition and structure of the house. Buying a home based solely on decor or other aesthetic pleasures will most likely result in future problems.

It?s a good idea to find a real estate agent who has lived in or near the area you are considering, so don?t be afraid to ask them. If an agent has recently moved to the area, they will not be as familiar with details such as community restrictions, roads and neighborhoods as a long-time resident. An agent with 10 or more years of experience in your area is ideal.

Plan your questions in advance when you sit down to talk with a potential real estate agent. Ask about things that really matter to you. For example, you might ask if they have sold a lot of homes in your area of interest, and find out the number of homes they have sold during the past year. A reputable agent will definitely be able to answer all questions you have.

Go online and check the registry for local sex offenders in the neighborhoods you are looking at buying in. While the sex offender registry is public, you had best check it yourself, as the agent and seller are unlikely to voluntarily disclose this information. Google up the registry yourself!

Some banks do not require you to do a house inspection, but this is not a reason to skip it. This is important because you simply never know what?s really going on under the surface of a home. So having a professional come in and inspect the premises is a smart move. It is important that a home inspector gives your future home an objective assessment before purchase; there are numerous problems that can arise that an untrained person may not see.

When you first begin looking for property, it can seem like the process is too complicated to understand, but once you get some information and add your own common sense, it?s not so bad. After following these tips, you can become a smarter property buyer.

To locate some more hints and tips like the ones shared in this article, follow this link: http://www.gregfly.com or http://www.gregfly.com/foreclosures/. Becoming educated about real estate buying is a very helpful thing that you can do for yourself. Without having any knowledge yourself, an agent may only offer so much. The final decisions must be made by you. These tips have made it easier for you to decide with confidence.

Vendome Pictures buys spec script "The Widow"

MELBOURNE, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic was well aware of up and coming American Ryan Harrison, even stating that he knew how to beat the 20-year-old, but his second round Australian Open opponent is sure he may be able to give the world number one a surprise on Wednesday. Two-time defending champion Djokovic will meet Harrison, for the third time in their careers, on Rod Laver Arena, and said after his first round victory over Paul-Henri Mathieu that he felt he knew the American's game and how to beat him. ...

Lindsay Lohan Fails to Get Jennifer Lawrence's Golden Globes Joke, Sparks Twitter Backlash

(Photos: Bauer Griffin)

Jennifer Lawrence has demonstrated she's not afraid to drop a few movie references in her acceptance speeches during her sweep through awards season. There was the Mean Girls trophy joke at the People's Choice Awards earlier this month, and then the First Wives Club quote when she won the Best Actress Golden Globe over Meryl Streep.

Lawrence's "It says, 'I beat Meryl'" Bette Midler tribute was one of the best moments of the show, and yet another reason in the long list of reasons why we love Lawrence. Unfortunately, not everyone in showbiz has the encyclopedic knowledge of cinema Lawrence does.

If you were following Lindsay Lohan's insightful tweets during the ceremony, you may have noticed she didn't get the joke, resulting in some anti-Lawrence sentiment on Twitter:

Confused by the backlash, Lawrence cleared the air on Tuesday's Letterman. "I had no idea Lidsay Lohan would take to the 'Twitterverse,'" she said, laughing. "I wanted to make a public statement like, 'You idiots, it's a quote from a movie.'"

Maybe Lohan should stop concerning herself with a misguided defense of Streep and start asking herself why she's at home tweeting instead of delivering her own acceptance speech. (Could she and Lawrence have a more disparate career trajectory?) But for us, the big takeaway comes down to this: Where do we sign up to be president of the Jennifer Lawrence fanclub?

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is putting a symbolic twist on a time-honored tradition, taking the oath of office for his second term with his hand placed not on a single Bible, but two ? one owned by Martin Luther King Jr. and one by Abraham Lincoln.

The inclusion of King's Bible is particularly significant since the inauguration comes on Jan. 21, the federal holiday in honor of the civil rights leader, who delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech 50 years ago at the Lincoln Memorial. Obama will be facing the memorial as he takes the oath. King's Bible, which his children say he used early in his career as a preacher, has never been part of a presidential inauguration.

The selection of the pair of Bibles is richly symbolic of the struggle for equality in America, beginning with Lincoln's emancipation of the slaves through King's civil rights movement and ultimately to Obama becoming the nation's first black president. Inaugural planners say Obama plans to place his left hand on the stacked Bibles held by first lady Michelle Obama as he raises his right hand to repeat the oath administered by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. It hasn't been determined which will be on top with Obama's hand actually resting on it, but King's is larger so it may need to be on the bottom.

Obama used the Lincoln Bible while taking the oath four years ago ? the first time it had been used since the 16th president's inauguration in 1861. Obama's inaugural committee says that the president plans to use the first lady's family's Bible for a private swearing-in at the White House on Sunday, Jan. 20. Public presidential inaugurations traditionally aren't held on Sundays, even though the Constitution states that a president's new term begins automatically at noon on the 20th.

King's children describe their father's King James version as his "traveling Bible" that he took as part of a collection of books he carried with him while constantly on the road and used for inspiration and preparing sermons and speeches. His daughter Bernice King says her father marked the pages with several dates from May 1954, the same month he delivered his first sermon at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala.

"We know our father would be deeply moved to see President Obama take the oath of office using his Bible," King's children said in a statement provided by the inaugural committee. "His traveling Bible inspired him as he fought for freedom, justice and equality, and we hope it can be a source of strength for the president as he begins his second term."

Obama also plans to honor King throughout his inaugural weekend, beginning by asking Americans to volunteer in their communities on Saturday, Jan. 19, to honor the civil right leader's legacy of service. The King family plans to participate. Inaugural planners also say there will be a float honoring King in the parade to the White House after the swearing-in ceremony.

Though there is no constitutional requirement for the use of a Bible while taking the oath, George Washington began the tradition with a Bible hastily grabbed from St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 1 for his swearing-in on April 30, 1789, in New York. Since then, presidents have typically chosen Bibles with historical or personal significance, many using family heirlooms. Obama is not the first president to select two Bibles ? Harry Truman did so in 1949, Dwight Eisenhower in 1953 and Richard Nixon in 1969.

Some presidents kiss the book after completing the oath. Sometimes the Bible is open to meaningful passages, such as President George W. Bush's choice of Isaiah 40:31 ? "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

The Lincoln Bible is part of the Library of Congress collections. The Supreme Court clerk bought the Bible, bound in burgundy velvet with a gold-washed white metal rim and heavily gilded edges, especially for Lincoln's swearing-in.

The first lady's Robinson family Bible was a gift from her late father, Fraser Robinson III, to his mother, LaVaughn Delores Robinson, on Mother's Day 1958. The first lady's grandmother was the first black female manager of a Moody Bible Institute's bookstore, and her son's present was her favorite, inaugural planners say.

They also say Vice President Joe Biden will use a Bible with a Celtic cross on the cover that has been in his family for 120 years. Biden has used the Bible every time he's been sworn into federal office, back to his entry in the Senate 40 years ago.

Hunting death mystery sparks high-level probe in Moldova

CHISINAU (Reuters) - Moldova on Thursday launched a top-level inquiry into the death of a well-connected businessman in a mysterious shooting incident during a hunting trip which has led to opposition charges of an attempted cover-up by senior government officials.

President Nicolae Timofti, in a move to stop the affair destabilizing the pro-Europe governing alliance, ordered the investigation though his office and scolded authorities for "keeping the tragedy secret" and thereby only fuelling speculation.

The businessman, 34-year-old Sorin Paciu, was one of a 32-strong party, which included top officials from the judiciary, who were hunting boar on a reserve north-west of the capital Chisinau on December 23 when he was shot and wounded in unexplained circumstances.

He died subsequently in hospital of his wounds and the general prosecutor's office formally opened a criminal case against unknown persons for manslaughter.

The leader of an anticorruption pressure group, Serdjiu Mocanu, later alleged that the general prosecutor himself, Valerii Zubco, who was on the same hunting trip, had been involved in the shooting.

Mocanu further alleged that Zubco's allies in government had sought to cover up the truth.

Zubco - a political appointee belonging to one of the ruling Alliance's three parties - has denounced the accusations as "lies and unbounded cynicism".

"I am aware of the slander about me, but I will give more detailed information only after an inquiry is completed as required by the law," he said in a statement.

But Mocanu's allegations of high-level collusion among top government officials to hide the truth have been pounced upon by the communist opposition eager to cause any discomfort for the pro-western coalition which has been in power for three years.

Communist supporters are staging protests outside the general prosecutor's office and the interior ministry in Chisinau, touting slogans calling for Zubco to resign.

Timofti's press spokesman said the commission of inquiry set up on Thursday would "clarify the actions of the law enforcement agencies around the incident".

But he said the president was "dissatisfied" with the work of the prosecutor's office, the police and agency which had organized the hunting trip.

The small ex-Soviet republic, one of Europe's poorest countries, is governed by the three-party Alliance for European Integration which is seeking to integrate Moldova into the European mainstream.

But the Alliance itself is threatened by rivalries among its three parties.

The communist opposition remains strong, particularly in the countryside, and, with economic growth at zero level, it continues to reap capital from the government's failure to bring any real improvements in living standards.

Tech WOW or Tech NO? | Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly ...

It?s not easy assessing job applicants? technology know-how.
by Keith Kirkpatrick

Robert needed his next hire to be solid in technology. When he interviewed Angela, he asked, ?How good are you with computers?? She responded, ?Great,? and explained that she had shot a few videos and posted them on YouTube. Besides, she had the usual array of capabilities listed on her resume for working with Microsoft Officae.

Raymond arrived for his interview, confident of his ability. During the conversation with Joan, she asked him to talk about his technology skills. He went on and on about Twitter, Facebook, Excel, a school graphic project, a hard-drive install and more. Joan thought she had acquired a technology superstar.

Cynthia was not sure what she was getting when she hired Desmond. He had a business degree, but was not forthcoming with his knowledge and skills in the areas of technology. He said he ?could hold his own? when working with computers, software and the Internet. He met the job requirements and seemed quite capable. Cynthia guessed she would find out what ?hold his own? meant when he started.

Three Weeks Later?
Angela had downloaded two viruses while ?researching? on the Internet and had no idea how it happened. Her struggle with the database software was painful. The telephone system baffled her, while her skills with Excel and PowerPoint were very limited. Her posted videos featured her friends at a party.

Raymond was right. He knew all about social media and that was nearly the totality of his prowess with technology. He said his computer was really slow, but was clueless on how to fine-tune it. He wasted large quantities of ink and paper trying to print in color. He did understand Facebook quite well because he was on it constantly ?for business purposes.?

Desmond was the surprise. He could hook up anything, helped everyone with computer questions, and understood how to use a cell phone in ways no one had ever seen. If he did not know the answer to a problem, he could always find the solution and apply it. He was a whiz.

Sound familiar? These scenarios are common for many employers. It is so difficult to ascertain the technology abilities of applicants. We assume that anyone under 30 is computer-savvy, that technology is in their genes. Wrong!

They have been around it more, but the technical side of work has become so vast that it is not possible to be great, even really good, at all of it.

When we interview candidates, we do not know what to ask and are lost in evaluating someone?s knowledge of hardware, websites, software, networks, cell phones and printers. We are not sure how to assess skills in document production, Web research, social media, Web posting or customizing software.

So here are some hiring tips. Before the interview, ask candidates to create a document with a little pizzazz using graphics or information you have supplied. Ask them to construct a spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation from data you provide. And ask them to send you the link to a favorite website and describe what features are attractive or useful.

During the interview, have candidates look for an answer on the Web to a current technology problem that you are facing and then implement the solution. Have the candidate retrieve a document in your system and print it without much instruction. Have candidates navigate the Web as they search for something you need and have each candidate analyze your website with suggestions of what could be improved. Finally, have the candidate demonstrate some interesting apps which are on his or her cell phone.

It takes a little more work, but what do you want, a tech WOW or a tech NO?

No. 21 Northwestern ends drought in Gator Bowl

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Behind huge interceptions early and late, No. 21 Northwestern beat Mississippi State 34-20 in the Gator Bowl on Tuesday and snapped college football's longest postseason losing streak.

The Wildcats (10-3) won their first bowl game since 1949, snapping a nine-game losing streak that was tied for the longest in NCAA history. They also celebrated double-digit victories for the first time since the 1995 Rose Bowl season.

Quentin Williams returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game and Nick Vanhoose set up a late touchdown with a 39-yard interception return. Those plays were the difference in a back-and-forth game that featured more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (six).

In between, Northwestern's two-quarterback system kept the Bulldogs (8-4) off balance most of the day.
