Brigham Young University recently released a study on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing that shows the contest generated nearly $21 million in revenue in 2010 for the state of Hawaii, where the nearly three-decade old event is hosted.

?The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is a treasure for Hawaii?s tourism industry, particularly for Oahu?s North Shore,? said Lenard Huff, Professor of Marketing, BYUH.?Our study took a two-pronged approach: the traditional economic impact study that estimates the net spending, both direct and indirect, that is generated from participants of the Triple Crown; and the less measurable, but equally important contributions that the Triple Crown makes to Hawaii?s image and brand. Not only does the Vans Triple Crown add to Hawaii?s economy, but it also provides global exposure of the best that Hawaii has to offer.?

Triple Crown director Randy Rarick, who has been involved with the contest since its start in 1983, agrees: ?To see the world?s best surfers ride the world?s most famous big waves, in the birthplace of the sport, is a memory of Hawaii that people carry with them for life.?

Exposing the sport of surfing to the masses while maintaining an air of authenticity for its core audience is no easy task, but Vans VP of Marketing Doug Palladini says the Triple Crown has been able to do just through social and interactive media campaigns, careful planning and drawing on the brand?s strong roots. Here?s what else he had to say about the study:

Was Vans aware that the contest was helping generate this much revenue for the North Shore and the state of Hawaii?

We weren?t surprised by the numbers at all. But what is surprising is the lack of understanding in Hawaii, California, and in other surfing capitals about just how much economic impact surfers truly have. We know what that power is because we see our brands? sales results. We know our consumers and their passion for surfing equipment, apparel and accessories. The study allows us to quantify this power in a way that local governments, travel authorities, and the broader sporting business can appreciate.

How will quantifying this power help the brand overall and help this particular event in the future?

In terms of quantifying the power of the VTCS, I was referring to educating travel and tourism authorities about surfing?s value. This isn?t just happening in Hawaii; California has the same challenge. They still put an emphasis on golf, stick and ball sports, and even triathalons over surfing. We believe that the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing can open eyes and represent the entire sport and culture of surfing in positive ways.

How has the marketing around this contest changed and evolved since 2006 (which was the last time this study was conducted?)

The sea of change here has obviously been the development of myriad interactive platforms: Websites, webcasts, mobile devices, and social media platforms have had a profound impact on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing in almost every conceivable way. The net impact of these powerful advances has been a six-week event that takes place along seven miles of Oahu?s North Shore yet impacts surfers in every country on every continent on Earth.

Why do you think this event has helped generate such a large economic impact for the North Shore?

By exponentially expanding the global base of surfers and lifestyle enthusiasts and their awareness and understanding of the rich VTCS tradition, we are attracting record numbers to the North Shore every VTCS season. Every house is rented, stores are packed, restaurants are crowded, and hotels are bustling as a result, full of surfers from all over the world.

How many people did the VTCS draw in last year, and how does that compare to past years?

23,195 across 12 days of competition. We did not include lay days, even though we attract attendance all 39 days of the series. It?s also important to note that we are continually working to strike a balance between access for all the fans and respect for our North Shore neighbors. The Kam Highway is a two-lane road with family homes along both sides. Finally, there are some very big variables in the year-to-year attendance based on size of surf. Eddie-sized swells bring bigger audiences, obviously.

What challenges and obstacles has the brand faced along the way?

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is widely regarded as the most important event in surfing after the World Title, and it has a storied past replete with amazing surfing lore. Our job has been to tell those stories in new and interesting ways, using the many robust platforms I detailed previously. The other major challenge has been building partnerships with like-minded brands who understand and embrace the VTCS ethos, as opposed to big corporations that merely count impression and logo hits. Brands such as Rockstar, Reef, and Billabong have provided huge value to the overall series as our event partners.

Can you go into detail about what type of strategy, planning, campaigns, etc., go into an event of this magnitude?

The VTCS has grown to where it is today due to a virtual army of talented and dedicated people, but at the end of the day, Randy Rarick IS The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. It is his leadership and sage guidance that allows Vans to put its marketing and promotional muscle to good use. The Vans brand has a strong tradition of producing events, but it?s our partnership with Randy and his team on the North Shore that is the key to our success.

How has Vans ensured that this contest still relates to its core audience while clearly reaching non endemic audiences and making them more aware of the brand and the sport?

We are committed to keeping the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing?s focus on surfing. There?s a role for multi-sport events from the US Open to the East Coast Surfing Championships, but the VTCS is going to remain a pure surfing experience, a hallowed tradition that kids grow up dreaming about surfing in. The Hawaiian heritage and power of Haleiwa, Sunset, and Pipeline provide all the interest we?ll ever need to attract both dedicated surfers and lifestyle enthusiasts.

How do you continue to generate a new sense of excitement around a contest that has been around for several decades?

The surfers keep it fresh. Every year, the best of the best come to the North Shore proving grounds to battle with their local Hawaiian peers in the world?s best waves. From Lopez to Sunny to Slater to John Florence, it?s a pretty compelling story each and every year.

What do you think lies in store for the future of this contest?

Let?s just say that it hasn?t gone unnoticed that 2012 is the 30th anniversary of the event. We have some pretty amazing things in store which we?ll be announcing during this year?s event.

PayPal Sues Over ?Wallet? Secrets; Google Says It Will Fight Back

Online payments giant PayPal has sued Google, alleging that two of the search titan?s senior executives who had previously worked at PayPal violated their contracts, and in one case actually stole confidential PayPal information and shared it with Google and other companies.

The two executives in question, Osama Bedier and Stephanie Tilenius, are now in charge of Google?s mobile-payments initiative, called Google Wallet, which the search giant announced at a press conference in New York on Thursday. Although the lawsuit does not refer to Google Wallet by name, there is an extensive discussion of the nascent ?digital wallet? market (.pdf) and of Bedier?s work in this area for PayPal before he joined Google in January.

PayPal?s lawsuit injects a dose of acrimony into what is quickly becoming a fiercely competitive race for advantage in the rapidly expanding mobile-payments market. Large corporations, from Silicon Valley to Wall Street, are jockeying for position and PayPal?s lawsuit appears intended, at least in part, to short-circuit Google?s ambitions in this arena.

As usual with Google, the company?s ambitions are high-flying. At the New York launch, Google said it had lined up several top-tier corporate partners to help roll out Google Wallet, which is based on NFC technology, including Citi, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint on the technology side, and Macy?s, Subway, Walgreens and Toys ?R? Us on the retail side.

In a company blog post, PayPal, a wholly owned subsidiary of online auction site eBay, said it didn?t really want to file the lawsuit because it prefers to ?compete and innovate, serving our customers by offering the best way to pay and be paid.?

But the company said it had little choice.

?Sometimes the behaviors of people and competitors make legal action the only meaningful way for a company to protect one of its most valuable assets ? its trade secrets,? Amanda Pires, senior director at PayPal for global communications, said in the blog post.

A Google representative said the company plans to defend itself against PayPal?s lawsuit.

?Silicon Valley was built on the ability of individuals to use their knowledge and expertise to seek better employment opportunities, an idea recognized by both California law and public policy. We respect trade secrets, and will defend ourselves against these claims,? the Google representative said in an e-mailed statement.

It?s clear that PayPal takes this matter extremely seriously, and it has brought out the big guns for what could be a long and unpleasant legal battle.

?Despite the relatively recent development of the use of a smartphone as a point-of-sale transaction device, PayPal?s trade secrets are particularly valuable in this emerging area,? PayPal said in its lawsuit, which was filed in San Jose, California, by the company?s legal team, led by legendary Silicon Valley ace counsel G. Hopkins (Hop) Guy, III, of Orrick, Herrington, & Sutcliffe.

?We treat PayPal?s ?secrets? seriously, and take it personally when someone else doesn?t,? PayPal?s Pires wrote.

PayPal charges that Bedier, who led much of Thursday?s Google Wallet launch, violated his contract by engaging in employment talks with Google, even as he led negotiations aimed at incorporating PayPal into Google?s Android Market, an app store for mobile devices. Further, and perhaps most seriously, PayPal alleges that Bedier ?misappropriated PayPal trade secrets by disclosing them within Google and to major retailers,? upon joining the search titan.

As for Tilenius, PayPal alleges that she violated her contract with the company by recruiting Bedier to Google, breaking an agreement she made not to poach her former colleagues. PayPal charges that almost immediately after being named to run Google Commerce & Payments group, Tilenius ?embarked on a campaign to hire Bedier away from PayPal,? in violation of her contract with her previous employer.

In the lawsuit, PayPal quotes from a Facebook message it alleges Tilenius sent to Bedier while he was still at PayPal. ?I heard from a little birdie that you might be open to bigger and better challenges, I have a HUGE opportunity for you, would love to chat if you are interested,? PayPal quotes Tilenius as writing to Bedier.

Additionally, PayPal charges,?in further breach of her contractual to obligations to eBay, Tilenius endeavored to recruit additional PayPal personnel through Facebook messages, in person and by providing Google recruiters with names and personal contact information of key PayPal employees.?

Google declined to comment beyond its statement.

Not everyone can attend the Midnight Sun Film Festival, the northernmost and some claim most cinephilic of fests, which makes Midnight Sun co-founder Peter van Bagh's nearly five-hour doc on the Finnish event's 25-year history, "Sodankyla Forever," as useful as it is valuable. Amounting to a declaration of principles on cinema's greatness and featuring a massive roster of world-class directors in public conversation, pic best captures a view of the artform that's wedged between classical and mainstream arthouse, and dominated by men. Fest tour should be epic. Van Bagh divides the pic into four sections, with the initial ones including fest screenings through the latter part of 2010. The complete work was preemed in Rotterdam, in the form in which it was broadcast on Finland's public YLE television channel. Thus, each section is bookended by opening and closing credits. However, the opus itself never plays like television onscreen, with Van Bagh's running commentary and reflections dipping in and out of the film in contrast with standard voiceover narrator. This adds to the feeling that the pic is a personal document as well as the work of a film historian -- Van Bagh's primary job when he isn't preparing each edition of Midnight Sun. The backbone of "Sodankyla Forever' (title refers to the tiny Finnish town where the fest takes place during midsummer, when the sun never sets during a 24-hour cycle) is an assemblage of clips taken from dozens of public interviews with major filmmakers who are guests of the festival. Typically seated onstage at a table with Van Bagh in front of a packed auditorium that also serves as one of the fest's main screening venues, the guests are asked a few key questions and allowed to launch into expansive answers. Interspersed with the clips are cutaways to the fest experience itself. Distinguishing this festival from all others in a visual sense, of course, is that there's never a glimpse of nightfall; and more so, that the filmmakers have such uncommon access to the festgoers. In the first section, titled "Century of Cinema," the filmmakers consider how history and film have interacted, and how the 20th century, particularly WWII, was documented on film. A long discussion about war and its effects, from Sam Fuller -- the fest's first honored guest -- on combat experience to Francis Coppola on Vietnam, may be a strange way to start a film about cinema's legacy, but the theme allows Von Bagh to create a gallery of the generations of Midnight Sun guests. It's quite likely that there will never be another film that encapsulates the living testimony of such a wide range of filmmakers from the classical Hollywood honor roll (Vincent Sherman, Stanley Donen) to '60s East European stars (Jerzy Skolimowski, Milos Forman, Miklos Jansco, Ivan Passer, Krzysztof Zanussi and, too briefly, Krzysztof Kieslowski) to French masters (Agnes Varda, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Demy) to American independents (Coppola, Jerry Schatzberg, John Sayles, Monte Hellman). This is a project that projects a particular view of cinema, from what might be called the establishment Euro-American arthouse perspective. Filmmakers from the '60s to the '80s dominate, with the current and widely international generation of cineastes virtually absent. Vid shooting (with Arto Kaivanto credited as d.p.) across the docu's decades displays varying image quality as video itself improved over time. Camerawork is scattershot and borderline amateur, which adds to the doc's genuinely cinephilic passions. Clip choices from films are rich and informed, along with some wonderful photo inserts, such as several pics of Andre Bazin, identified as the most important film critic in the history of cinema. Music cues are fairly obscure, and uncredited.

This seems simple and appropriate but, in fact, it contains deadly assumptions and pitfalls.

First, who actually at the carrier is reading the material and making sure it meets minimum standards?

Second, what if the carrier doesn?t follow up on deficient information?

?

It is generally assumed that nearly all C-2s are correctly filled out and only a few exceptions actually fall between the cracks. In fact, only a few percent are correctly completed. Vital information, if not provided by the employer, is ignored, leading to unnecessary litigation, hearings, and costs. In addition, the honest employee is damaged even more.

A highly accurate first report is all that separates an employer and an employee from financial disaster. Even if matters are finally resolved, the process takes years at the WCB ? years during which a family may be cut off from meaningful support. Or, equally likely, an unworthy claim which could have been put to rest at the start, is eventually ?settled? for ?nuisance value.? When the employer gets the bill ? in higher x-mods ? it will be a lot more deadly than mere nuisance. Unwarranted workers comp claims costs destroys jobs.

If an employer fails to provide sufficient information in a first report to get and keep a claim on the right track and receives no follow-up from a carrier, it is time to rethink reporting procedures. (WCxKit)

Gaming Industry ? Do not want ? Eli&#39;s Ramblings

This to me is a very sad blog post.? It represents the death of one of my dreams.

You see, back when I was in High School, and getting the ?You can do whatever you want to do? dream speech.? I decided (after a brief fascination with chemistry) that I wanted to get into Computer Science.

Why?? Well one reason only.? I loved video games, so I wanted to make them.

Fast forward a few years, and I?m in college, and this ?Web? thing appears.? It?s cool, it?s new, none of the ?establishment? understands it.? And so the interns/college assistants get tasked to deal with it.? I start working on the Web.?? Which leads to my first ?real? job being doing ?Web? stuff ? 16 years later:? Guess what, I?m still on the Web.

Don?t get me wrong, I love the web and everything that it has become.? It?s amazing.? But in the back of my mind, and my heart, there?s always been this little longing for my original goal: Games.

Once, I almost had my ?in? to the industry.? At the time, this little barely known company, called Bethesda Softworks, had an advertisement for a ?Webmaster? (ah, those were the days).? I tried to apply but we were having some issues between our fax machines, and an official piece of paperwork I had to sign that they would only fax to me, not send in mail.?? That was right about the time I got the offer to work at Hubble.? And you know, that was pretty cool also, so I took it

I long let that dream die, and embraced the area that naturally fell into my lap.? Until recently.

As part of doing some soul-searching upon the loss of my most recent position: My wife was asking me what I really wanted to do in my heart.? To think outside the box of the positions that I?d been holding.? To expand the search parameters of companies that I?d been looking at.?? Immediately that long hidden thought in the back of my head spoke to me and made me scream: ?GAMES!? I WANNA MAKE GAMES!?.?? I scared my wife.

So I explored that option.? You see, this is the perfect time for it.? Facebook has almost single handedly make the world of Games & Web collide.? Now everyone is playing games online, and Web Professionals are needed to make that happen.

But, you know what, after exploring this option I came to one conclusion:

DO NOT WANT!

Really.? I talked with a number of gaming companies that wanted Web professionals.? Two in particular I talked to in depth.? One of them is a HUGE name in online games, another was a brand new startup in the field, just about to release their first game.

Both of them had the exact same problem, which led me to walk away:? Ridiculous assumptions/requirements upon the employees.? I?d long heard the horror stories of videogame companies, long hours, low pay, weekend work.? You play video games and read the end credits and the quotes are a litany of ?Thanks to my wife & kids who I didn?t see for 2 years?

But I assumed, incorrectly it seems, that the ?Web Games? companies would more closely track ?Web Application? companies in concept.? (Not that some Web companies don?t have the same problems.)

I was sadly mistaken.? All companies I talked to outright expected employees to put in amazingly long hours, work weekends, etc.? I was told ?joking? stories by management about employees complaining that their wives were going to leave them.? I was asked to work for a company for zero pay.? And not even a ?until we get funding? type situation.? But even after funding, because marketing dollars were going to be more important than paying salaries.

In the end, I had to take the bitter pill, and walk away again.

This isn?t to say that I wouldn?t love some day to somehow get involved in the gaming industry.? I still love video games and play them nigh every day.

But I?m not going to walk into those situations.? It would take a company that breaks from that mold, and is a family-friendly company that respects it?s employees work/life balance.

The older I get, the more I value stability and just wanting to work for a company that is doing something ?awesome and cool?, whatever that is.? While at the same time, respecting families, and completely understanding that work isn?t ?life?.

I guess your values change when you get old ? Too much gray hair on this head.

I have been investing in stocks an have made and lost money. I have made but not lost money in VASGX (Vanguard Life Strategy Growth Fund) and still have it and I have VFIFX ( Vanguard Target Retirement 2050 Fund) in my ROTH IRA. I have GCC Green Haven Continues Commodity Index fund and lost some but still hang on because I believe commodity prices are and will continue to go up. Your opinion?
