Avoid House Fires During the Summer

As we make the transition from the cold months to the warmer months, there are seasonal habits that we will be taking back up to get into the swing of things as the summer starts up. With this warm season comes fresh vegetation outside and many outdoor activities that family and friends will gather for. With all of these great things comes some additional responsibilities that you will need to remember as you get your summer kicked off. By remembering these responsibilities and taking them seriously, you will avoid most of the reasons for house fires during the summer months.

With the vegetation coming back to full growth during this warm time of the year, it will be time to get that lawn equipment out of the garage and ready to run. Something you should pay close attention to here is that the lawn mower that you are operating has a small combustion engine that requires gasoline to run. With the engine being small, it is going to be working pretty hard to handle cutting your entire lawn. This means that when you are finished with cutting your grass, you have an extremely hot engine that contains gasoline that you are about to put inside one of the rooms in your home. When put like that, it is easy to understand why you may need to allow the mower to sit outside in the shade and experience a cool off period before it is placed into a room with very limited circulation. Another related item that you need to be careful with is the gasoline storage can that is used to fuel your mower. This can should never be placed out in the sun where it could get extremely hot. It should also never be placed near any items that may occasionally contain a flame such as a gas water heater. This same practice applies to anything else that you may store in your garage that has a gas powered motor.

Cooking outside is quite popular during the summer months. Having family and friends over to cook out in the backyard can be very fun, but it can also be very distracting. Usually you will find children and pets in attendance at events such as these, and when operating a grill to cook with, this can be a disaster waiting to happen. It is important to never leave a grill with an open flame in it unattended. Too many accidents can occur when people gather around an open flame. You will also want to make sure that your grill is a safe distance away from your home. This is a common problem, as people tend to put them as close to the back door of the home as possible to make it more convenient for them when walking back and forth. The problem here is that if the open flame inside a grill gets out of control or reaches out and catches something else on fire, your home is now in great danger of catching on fire as well. The safest thing for you and everyone else when operating a grill is to place it a good distance from the house and be sure that someone is tending to it every moment that it is in use.

By following these simple guidelines while at home, you can save yourself quite a bit of trauma down the road by keeping your house out of harm's way. Most household fires can be avoided by the home owner's themselves paying more attention to what is being stored in their homes and what is going on just outside of their homes. It only takes a few moments and a little thought to prevent a tragedy that could cause you to lose your home and with it possibly your loved ones too.
