Spacey helps make TV history with 'House of Cards'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kevin Spacey loves being part of what he calls "a new paradigm": Internet television that's just as compelling and well produced as anything on a cable or broadcast channel.

Spacey was nominated for an Emmy Award Thursday for his leading role in "House of Cards," the Netflix original series that collected nine bids in all.

"I'm so happy for the series and so happy for Netflix ... because it's a big acknowledgement of the show and its quality," said Spacey, also an executive producer. "For us to have broken through in ... so many categories, nine nominations, for what is really, in many ways, a new paradigm, is so thrilling."

Internet TV is a new frontier with new rules. For example, Netflix didn't require "House of Cards" to begin with a pilot episode introducing the main characters and story lines, freeing the writers to create natural suspense in an evolving story.

"It changes the creative process of how you write a show," said Spacey, 53. "When they gave us an order of 26 episodes ? or chapters, as we like to call them ? that was a remarkable thing for us because it meant that we could just get on with telling the story."

The way the show is distributed ? all 13 episodes available at once ? also offers audiences more choices about how to consume it.

Such creative flexibility draws film writers, directors and actors, such as Spacey, to the TV landscape.

"For storytellers who want to tell stories that are driven by character and not by explosions and things that only, in a sense, appeal to the heartbeat or the pulse and not the mind, then it makes sense to me that the best writers and directors and actors and storytellers are going to go to the ground where it is fertile," he said. "It's very fertile now, obviously. The streaming business is fertile, and the television business in its usual sense."

Russian opposition leader sentenced to 5 years

KIROV, Russia (AP) ? Alexei Navalny, one of the Russian opposition's leading figures, was convicted of embezzlement Thursday and sentenced to five years in prison.

Navalny and his supporters claimed the case was politically driven to try to shut down the vehement Kremlin critic and intimidate his supporters.

Navalny was found guilty of heading a group that embezzled 16 million rubles' ($500,000) worth of timber from state-owned company Kirovles in 2009 while he worked as an unpaid adviser to the provincial governor in Kirov, about 760 kilometers (470 miles) east of Moscow.

The 37-year-old lawyer played with his smartphone for much of the nearly 3 ?-hour verdict reading. A post on his Twitter account after the sentence was pronounced said, "Oh, well. Don't get bored without me. And, importantly, don't be idle ..."

Navalny handed the phone and his watch to his wife, Yulia, before bailiffs took custody of him and co-defendant Pyotr Ofitserov, who was given a four-year sentence.

Navalny first came to wide attention for vigorous blogging about corruption. He was a top leader of the wave of massive protest rallies that broke out in late 2011 after a national parliamentary election scarred by allegations of widespread fraud.

It was Navalny who first called the dominant United Russia party "the party of crooks and thieves," a phrase that became a rallying cry for the nascent opposition to Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin.

More recently, he pushed his ambitions by declaring himself a candidate for this fall's Moscow mayoral election.

The head of his campaign staff, Leonid Volkov, said a decision on whether to pull out of the race would be made only after he could consult with Navalny, according to the ITAR-Tass news agency. Russian news reports said Navalny would be taken to a detention facility in Kirov before being sent to a prison.

Several dozen Navalny supporters gathered outside the detention facility soon after the sentencing.

Navalny's wife appeared composed after seeing her husband taken away in handcuffs, saying, "If someone hopes that Alexei's investigations will cease, that's wrong."

Catherine Ashton, foreign policy chief for the European Union, said she was concerned about the conviction and sentence, saying in a statement that the charges had not been substantiated during the trial.

"This outcome, given the procedural shortcomings, raises serious questions as to the state of the rule of law in Russia," she said.

The Russian stock market, sensitive to politically charged issues, dove within minutes of the verdict, with the main MICEX index dropping 1.4 percent before partly recovering.

Before the sentencing, Navalny's supporters had said they would rally in Moscow if he were sent to prison. That could provoke a confrontation with police, who routinely crack down harshly on any unsanctioned rallies.

The judge said he found the testimony of key prosecution witness Vyacheslav Opalev to be "trustworthy and consistent."

Opalev, who was the timber company's general director, got a suspended sentence in an expedited trial in December after pleading guilty to conspiring with Navalny.

Navalny insists Opalev framed him out of revenge: Navalny had recommended that Opalev be fired and that officials investigate potential corruption in his company, which had incurred 200 million rubles ($6 million) in losses by the time Navalny arrived in the region.

Throughout the trial, testimony of prosecution witnesses clashed with the core arguments of the indictment that claimed Navalny's work in Kirov led to the embezzlement. None of the managers at Kirovles who appeared in court, except for Opalev, was able to confirm that Navalny defrauded the company.

Navalny had long said he expected to be convicted, and in a final blog post before leaving Moscow for Kirov, he downplayed his personal importance to the wider opposition.

"The most important thing is to muster up the strength, shake off laziness and do something. This doesn't require any leadership as such," he wrote.

7-15 4:35pm Sports Talk: NFC South

-- -- -- covering the Atlanta Falcons for CBS sports dot com joining us now. Break down the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC south and not right now we look at some of the acquisitions starting with Stephen Jackson. For the Atlanta Falcons as they they seem to we've gotten better and hardy added and just another weapon that already code office. Yes he can accept it is definitely stepped up Michael Turner who was just. On the back -- of his career last year he got it on the ball harder than there is no break all the will be more than turner can't. But I think the most important thing projection into the team and versatility talk about -- -- -- have gotten ninety plus passing it in the season in the past he's got. Ian he'd get -- -- and -- -- -- -- Chris Rodgers in any more to have the receiver accurately can leave. Check him out there all the time. They and most importantly they can let Matt Bryant go to the line of scrimmage and changed plays or even call -- out of a no huddle because traction either run or catch the ball. I think they should sponsor -- the versatile. Knox who is the team that you think in the NFC south that's going to push Atlanta for the NFC south crown. I've I haven't I wouldn't camp that they are going to be in -- I honestly think it could be -- You might see situation this year where -- open the Falcons are seemed to be in the division but I think the Saints and the books could. Could both make the playoffs with a couple things go right for each team. I think they can either of them to LeapFrog over -- I mean let's not forget that no team has won in the peace now with back to Lexington to dig it up it. What's what's the biggest concern you have for Atlanta right now did they didn't make enough of grades on the defense out of football and they got. Osi Umenyiora in the mix but were where they got better and have the address those needs enough. I don't think they did okay on the peak at the powerball and if there's one. Clearly an issue like looping it around -- the on the offensive line and you're talking about -- that was a play away from the Super Bowl and other and there are. The following season where would you position battles and three players that are indeed on the on the option who lives so it doesn't. Right now I you know. Bryant had the apply to throw the ball but we don't win games in the fourth quarter like you know it's as. I'm trying to work in the training camp next week -- that the offensive line could be the biggest question. Visiting wood knocks -- covering the Atlanta Falcons for CBS sports stock comment Knox is anybody taken. Tig Notaro Is Cancer-Free and Wants To Tell Jokes In Your Living Room

The last year and a half has literally been the best of times and the worst of times for comedienne Tig Notaro. Last summer, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, lost her mother and broke up with her girlfriend all within the span of four months. Fortunately, the combination of these tragic occurrences culminated in a wealth of creative energy, which was exhibited on stage last August in a legendary stand-up set at Largo in Los Angeles.

Louis CK called the set "one of the greatest stand-up performances I ever saw" and released it as an album on his website soon after to an overwhelmingly positive response. By years end, Tig Notaro's Live was voted the #1 stand-up album of the year by The A.V. Club, topping releases from veterans like Jim Gaffigan and even CK himself.

Live will finally see a physical release this week -- marked by Notaro doing a Q&A tonight at the Grammy Museum -- but her recent surge in popularity has afforded her a number of other opportunities, including two documentaries, a book deal and a writing gig on Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer. Before starting on her just-announced tour documentary for Showtime next month, Notaro will celebrate the one-year anniversary of her storied performance with a headlining date at Largo. We recently spoke with her about her current projects, her entry into stand-up comedy and getting thrown off set for making her co-stars laugh.

What was it like working on the first season of Inside Amy Schumer? Will you be back next year?

No, I kind of don't have time to anymore. I couldn't make it work, so I'm just gonna be doing my own stuff. It was a great experience though. It was my first "go to an office everyday" type job.

Can you tell us about your new tour documentary for Showtime that was just announced?

Well I'm doing this thing where I go to my fan's homes and I'm doing a tour in living rooms, backyards, barns, basements and rooftops. I start filming that at the beginning of next month, but I don't know when it airs.

The executive producer is gathering the information, and then I'm going to review the tapes that come in. I think they're gonna select some and then show them to me and I'll pick where we go. I'm looking forward to it. Just the cooler, the weirder the place, the sooner I think I'll be there.

Have you done anything like this before? It seems like the logistics might be sort of complicated.

I've done it as a tour in the past and it's so much fun. When I did it on the road, somebody books me to go to their house and it's up to them to invite their friends. Then it's a suggested donation of 20 dollars at the door.

I read that one of the things that inspired you to try stand-up was seeing so many open mics and shows advertised in L.A. Weekly.

Well, I was coming from Denver at the time. Denver, they just have the club and the open mic in a Mexican restaurant. It was kind of daunting, but people are shocked that I started stand-up in L.A. They're like "God, you're so brave. I made sure I got things together in my town before I went out there."

To me, that sounds horrible to just have no options to do stand-up and then try to get it together to go to L.A., rather than just starting at laundromats and coffee shops and bars, which are the options in L.A.. As soon as I decided I wanted to actually start doing it two weeks into being there, I just had so many options. But when you're getting started, that's all you need -- a laundromat with a microphone.

Prior to trying stand-up comedy, though, you were managing bands in Denver. Did you always picture yourself working in the music business?

I was just managing some local bands in Denver, anywhere from rock to the singer-songwriter type thing. I play guitar and I thought that I would maybe be playing in bands, but then I kind of had stage fright. I always wanted to be around music, though, so I just started working on the business side of things. I thought I was really into it, but I always wanted to do stand-up, so once I started doing stand-up I couldn't even pretend like I cared about anything other than that.

That crossover between comedy and music seems to be more and more prevalent these days.

Yeah, it's weird because my record label [Secretly Canadian] is an indie-rock label and then my booking agent is now strictly booking comedy, but before he only booked indie rock bands. So no matter what I do, it just seems like I'm still in the music world. I do all of these comedy and music festivals so there's constant crossover. But it's nice because when my albums come out, there are reviews in magazines like Rolling Stone and stuff. I think the association with music kind of gets me into some weird doors.

Cape Cod, California style: Architect Joyce Flood brings a West Coast feel to an East Coast design

patio

The 16th Street Hermosa Beach home designed by architect Joyce Flood is Cape Cod in style, but it looks West.

Wandering the Strand in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach, one can become numb to architectural excitement with every passing colossal, geometric, glass-fronted beach house. These homes are no less spectacular for their shared aesthetic, but their visual impact can become diluted when taken in large doses.

Then a Cape Cod style pops up. Its symmetry and simplicity are a flash of modesty amongst a tableau of grandeur. It?s lovely and fine. It?s the girl-next-door gracing a room full of dolled-up supermodels with her elevated, classic beauty.

Just a block up from the Strand, 119 16th St. in Hermosa Beach, is such a house.

Chocolate wooden shingles frame the bright white details including protruding windows and a gated top-floor balcony. The 4-bedroom, 3.5 bath, 2,963 square-foot single family home is an embodiment of a Southern California take on Cape Cod style.

The home was built in 2008 as a spec home for MRW Design Development. The home?s architect, Joyce Flood, specializes in Cape Cod style and was not surprised that this was the direction that developer Mike Woodcock wanted to take.

?It used to be, when I started my practice here in the late ?90s, the Mediterranean look was the big thing,? Flood said. ?Now things have changed and people more are interested in the Cape Cods; the warm, homey styles. I think Cape Cods appeal to people because it doesn?t go out of style. It?s not trendy.?

Photos by Daniel Sofer/Hermosawave.net

Though the growing demand in the South Bay market for the Cape Cod style may make it the no-brainer design choice for a spec house in Hermosa Beach, it doesn?t mean the project, itself, will be simple.

?We have to adapt the Cape Cod look to make it work,? Flood explained. ?The true Cape Cod is more formal. It?s more symmetrical. But because we don?t have the wide lots here like they do in New England, we have to adapt the style to fit the narrow lots.?

This tinkering is as important on the inside as it is on the outside. True Cape Cod style homes have the luxury of wide inside space, so they can create smaller, cozier rooms inside without feeling claustrophobic. In the Beach Cities, it?s all about keeping that space open.

?Because the lots are so narrow, I want to create wide open space and flow inside,? Flood said. ?It?s one of the reasons I like designing Cape Cods so much. I love that wide open floor plan.?

The second-floor kitchen flows into the living room and right out onto a south-facing balcony with views straight to Palos Verdes. Windows punctuate each side of the second floor and the panoramic view provides even more latitude from the lot?s spacial restrictions.

The result is a West Coast imagining of an East Coast classic.

I think part of the reason we see so much demand for the Cape Cods in the South Bay is that we have so many East Coast transplants.? Flood said. ?They want to see that style here.?

Luckily, Flood shares their enthusiasm.

?I get excited when people call and want to do that style,? she said. ?I like doing all the little details. It?s my favorite kind of house to work on. And this one at 119 16th Street has been my favorite yet.?

NBA Summer League Game Preview: Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers

Summer basketball is here and the Phoenix Suns hope to roll out a team that is more competitive than their regular season squad. Their first stepping stone on the way to their summer league championship is a very talented Portland team.

When: Saturday, July 13, 2013, 5:30 PM local time (8:30 EST)

Where: Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV

Watch: The game is being shown on tape delay on NBA TV at 10:30 PM (local time). DVR is always an option. If you don't have access to NBA TV or would rather watch it live, the entire summer league slate can streamed online via a $14.99 subscription on NBA.com.

----------

Suns_summer_roster_7

----------

What to watch for:

----------

Not Alex Len. He's recovering from his second surgery in less than three months to treat stress fractures in both of his ankles. It's really a shame because it would have been nice to see him match up against the Blazers talented young center, Meyers Leonard.

----------

Archie Goodwin. This guy's going to be around for a minute and this might be one of the best chances to get a sneak peek. He likely won't see a ton of playing time during the regular season being such a raw young talent. Interestingly, if Archie is back in Vegas for his last summer league two years from now he still won't be old enough to buy a beer.

----------

Robinson vs. the Morri in a battle of underperforming power forwards from Kansas. Marshall vs. Strickland in a clash for powder blue supremacy.

----------

C.J. McCollum starts his quest to stultify the nine teams that passed him over in last year's draft.

----------

This will be new head coach Jeff Hornacek's first time acting in that capacity. It's summer league, but it's still good experience for a novice coach with a new team.

----------

Remember everyone. This year counts!

This will be the first year that a "champion" of the summer league is crowned.

Teams will play three games between July 12-16 and be seeded based on those results to compete in a single elimination tournament.

The point system is as follows:

3 points for a win

1 point for winning a quarter

.5 points for tying a quarter

Tiebreakers will be head-to-head record, overall point differential and (as a last result, awesomely) a coin flip.

Obviously this is mostly about getting eyes on new prospects and letting the coaches and players feel each other out, but winning is fun too.

Check out Dave's Roster Announcement and Jacob's Summer League Primer for additional info.

Keepin' it real fake: HTC One gets a convincing plastic clone (video)

Keepin' it real fake HTC One finally gets a convincing plastic clone

We hate to say this, but the KIRF market is often a good indicator on how popular certain devices are, hence the plentiful of fake iPhones and Galaxy phones in China. (Meanwhile, MediaTek is shamelessly cashing in as it ships its SoCs to those cloning factories.) Now, we're not saying the HTC One doesn't have any clones, but most of those we've seen weren't very convincing -- they were either of different sizes or had very poor build quality. But we eventually stumbled upon a pretty good fake in Huaqiangbei.

The offending device is pictured above on the left. Externally, it bears a disgustingly strong resemblance to the real deal thanks to the same 4.7-inch screen size, the same curved back, the same micro-SIM tray, the same dual-soft-key layout and even the same metallic chamfer on the front. But if you look closer or touch it even, the tell-tale signs start to show up. See for yourself in the gallery below -- the fake One is to the left or on top of the real thing.

Friday?s area sports briefs

? Coastal Carolina junior Andrew Dorn, of West Chester, Ohio, won the 2013 Ohio Amateur Championship Friday at Canton?s par 71 Brookside Country Club. The win came one week after winning the prestigious North & South Amateur.

Dorn carded a 2-over 73 on the final day, but birdied the final two holes in the final round to claim a two-stroke victory. He carded rounds of 66-69-73 for a 54-hole total of 5-under par 208. Daniel Belden (70-69-71) and Corey Richmond (63-71-76) tied for second, each shooting 210.

Dorn?s win at the North & South Amateur holds good company, with high profile names such as Arnold Palmer, John Cook, Ben Curtis and Frank Stranahan having also won the tournament.

Shooting 16 birdies over three rounds, Dorn also shot five bogeys over a 10-hole span in the final round before a birdie on the 140-yard, par 3 14th. Despite a bogey on 15, Dorn responded with birdies on holes 17 and 18, both par 5?s, to secure the two-stroke win.

Dorn recorded just one bogey in the first round, adding six birdies, for his 5-under round of 66 to tie for second. In round two, he had four birdies and two bogeys for a 2-under round of 69.

Carolina?s Amateur Championship

The 2013 Carolinas Amateur Championship second round was shortened by rain. The morning wave was able to complete most of their scheduled 18 holes before play was suspended at 12:55pm due to severe weather. After a three-hour rain delay due to local thunder and lightning, play resumed at 3:55 p.m. The morning wave completed their rounds and the afternoon players played until suspended by darkness at 8:35pm. The second round will be completed Saturday morning beginning at 8:00 am.

Astronauts to perform cleaning chores outside International Space Station

Two astronauts, NASA?s Chris Cassidy and the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano, will work for six and a half hours outside the International Space Station on Tuesday.

Two astronauts, NASA?s Chris Cassidy and the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano, will float outside the International Space Station for about 6 1/2 hours on Tuesday, beginning at 8:10 am EDT. Live footage of the spacewalk will be available starting at 7:00 am EDT.

As romantic as a spacewalk sounds, the venture is more of a cleaning exercise: the astronauts, both from Expedition 36, will curl around the spacecraft as it floats somewhere above the Sinai Peninsula, doing a number of chores that have piled up over the years. The work includes replacing failed equipment, prepping the station to receive the Russian Multipurpose Laboratory Module as an attachment, and assessing damage.

During the trip outside, the astronauts will also collect equipment used in the Materials International Space Station Experiment-8 (or MISSE-8), which assessed the impacts of the space environment on various materials. Those experiments will be ferried back to Earth aboard the SpaceX-3 commercial cargo craft later this year.?

The pair will finish up the work on a second spacewalk scheduled for July 16th .

Since spacewalks are time-consuming and punishingly exhausting (in the pressurized suit, the astronaut must strain to move his or her hands in the gloves), the Space Station had allowed broken equipment and needed maintenance to accumulate, in order to justify the trip outside. The Space Station has been serviced in two previous spacewalks this year.

The first spacewalk, in March 1965, set a precedent for keeping spacewalks to just the necessary minimum needed to keep the craft in functional order. That month, the Soviets sent astronaut Alexey Leonov outside the Voshkod 2 affixed to a 50-foot tether for about 12 minutes. Leonov made it back into the spacecraft, but not without considerable difficulty, and the Soviets did not attempt the feat again for another four years. The first American spacewalk that summer was similarly successful but troubled, after a hatch-latching mechanism failed and imperiled the entire crew.

But despite the challenges, astronauts who have stepped outside their crafts for a balcony view to the entire Earth have called the experience an unforgettable one. Astronaut Ed White, who spent time outside Gemini 4, said being instructed to climb back in the spacecraft was "the saddest moment of my life."?

Rex Walheim, who ventured outside the Atlantis space shuttle in 2002, remembered the rapid succession of day and night - the world was going from dark to bright every some 45 minutes, since the craft was orbiting Earth every hour and a half.?And?John Herrington, who logged three spacewalks on the space Shuttle Endeavour,?noticed the smell - space, he said, has a strange odor, something akin to burnt metal.

This spacewalk is the 170th walk to maintain the station. The station?s external care has involved 111 astronauts from eight countries who have logged some 1,067 hours and 43 outside the craft, Florida Today reported.

This is the first spacewalk for an Italian astronaut, and Parmitano will wear a red, white, and green flag affixed to his spacesuit as he floats out of the station. This is Cassidy?s fifth spacewalk.

Skaneateles United Methodist Church hosts 54th Antique Show

Skaneateles, NY -- From fine art and oak furniture to vintage hunting and fishing gear, the Skaneateles United Methodist Church Antique Show continued its 54-year tradition this weekend at the Austin Park Pavilion in Skaneateles. With more than 70 dealers and 40 artisans from across New York and neighboring states, the show offered antique aficionados an unique shopping experience. Antique appraisals were offered on both Friday and Saturday for a small fee.

The antique show is also a fundraiser for the church. "We use it as a way of putting on our church programming, our mission work," said antique dealer chair Shari Ross. "It becomes a tradition of goodwill in the community."

Apart from the dealers and artisans, Ross said that there is an anticipated turnout of more than 1700 attendees over both days.
