LONDON (Reuters) - Still famous as the in-again/out-again member of chart-topping boyband Take That, British singer Robbie Williams says it is time to get serious as a solo artist and prove his place at the top of the pop pile.
Williams told reporters on Monday he planned a 15-date European stadium tour kicking off in Manchester on June 19, 2013 and concluding in Tallinn, Estonia on August 20.
"I'm buzzing. I'm ready to go. I haven't done a tour of this size since 2006," he said in London.
"I think it's legacy time, because I'm venturing into getting my handicap down at golf and all that business.
"I'm nearly 40, that's what I'm trying to say. I want to go and seal my place in pop history and go off and deliver a tour of great magnitude while I still can."
The 38-year-old in fact enjoyed major success after leaving Take That in 1995, producing a string of hit albums and singles including "Angels" and "Millennium" and signing a contract with EMI in 2002 reportedly worth tens of millions.
But by the time his 2006 album "Rudebox" came out followed by "Reality Killed the Video Star" in 2009, he was seen as a dwindling force in British pop who had failed to break the key U.S. market.
Williams rejoined Take That in 2010 and they recorded the hit album "Progress" before touring together in 2011, and the singer said the experience had helped give him confidence to tour large venues again as a solo artist.
"I just ran out of ideas and ran out of a bit of creativity and ran out of energy and did the textbook 'burnt out'," he said of the late 2000s.
"But I've been working really hard and I needed to do something else, and fortunately it came in the shape of my old band. A lot of demons were vanquished from the past. A lot of wrongs were put to rights.
"That tour last summer was just absolutely incredible. It kick-started my professional career."
Earlier this month, Williams returned to the top of the album charts with "Take the Crown".
Asked whether he would consider rejoining Take That again, he replied: "I haven't officially left ... What I do know is that ... if we all remain healthy then I will definitely be a part of Take That at some point. It's joyful being around them."
Williams conceded it may be too early to talk about his legacy at 38, but added he wanted to "put my stamp down.
"The fact that 40 is looming plays on my mind more than it does on anybody else's mind. Pop stars cease to be pop stars at 40 and start being old people singing, don't they?
"There is a forum for a male solo star to get up there in stadiums and own the place and I want that to be me, so I've kind of been lethargic for the last couple of albums."
Williams recently became a father, and said his daughter would accompany him on tour. Olly Murs, who rose to fame on "The X Factor" reality TV show, will support Williams on his tour.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? How does "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" squeeze even more fun out of our porous little hero and the Bikini Bottom gang? By turning the animated characters three-dimensional for their holiday special.
In a tribute to classic fare such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," the "SpongeBob SquarePants" crew has been re-imagined as puppets and put through their comedy paces for stop-motion photography.
The story line was dreamed up by Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob: The denizens of Bikini Bottom are suddenly rude because of exposure to jerktonium, a plot by naughty Plankton to get on Santa's (voiced by guest star John Goodman) nice list.
Plankton "wants to put everyone on their worst behavior when they should be on their best behavior, and zany mayhem ensues," Kenny said.
"It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" debuts 9:30 p.m. EST Friday on CBS, followed by an encore on the show's home network, Nickelodeon, at 7:30 p.m. EST Sunday, Dec. 9.
The first-time foray into stop-motion is a welcome change for the 13-year-old "SpongeBob," Kenny said.
"It's fun that after all these years we can still do stuff that's a little different. It's like reinventing the wheel a little bit ? if you can refer to a square character as a wheel," he added, unable to resist the quip.
The actor looks back fondly on childhood memories of "Rudolph" from the Rankin-Bass studio and other stop-action projects. Even the TV commercial that put Santa on an electric razor subbing for a sleigh gets a Kenny shoutout.
Asked if young viewers might be fazed by seeing the familiar characters in a new guise, Kenny mulled the question before rebutting it.
"The characters act the same, the recording process is exactly the same. Our job is exactly the same. ... There's still plenty of the animated mayhem and anarchy that happens in the 2-D version of the show."
Screen Novelties, the Los Angeles studio that produced the Christmas special, made a feast out of the job. In just one of their inventive approaches, filmmakers used fruit-flavored cereal to create a coral reef.
"I came to the studio and they had hundreds of boxes of cereal open and were hot-gluing it together," Kenny recalled.
The Patrick Star puppet was covered in wool-like material and SpongeBob "wasn't a sponge but some kind of weird material they found somewhere," he said, admiringly. "They're like 'MacGyver,' always repurposing something."
The TV special has a small element of recycling. Kenny calls it a testament to "a goofy little song" he and collaborator Andy Paley wrote three years ago, "Don't Be a Jerk, (It's Christmas)."
"Bring joy to the world, it's the thing to do. But the world does not revolve around you. Don't be a jerk, it's Christmas" is among its bouncy but cautionary verses.
The tune is among a dozen included on the digital release "It's a SpongeBob Christmas! Album," most written by Kenny and Paley (a songwriter-producer who's worked with artists including Brian Wilson and Blondie), and four of them part of the special.
Music fans might want to check out the album for its craftsmanship. The veterans who play on it include harpist Corky Hale and harmonica player Tommy Morgan, both of whom have backed a roster of big stars, including Billie Holliday and Frank Sinatra.
The recording sessions proved an early holiday gift for Kenny.
"We'd spend a half-hour working and then make the musicians tell stories about who they played with," he said.

Well, that's sort of what the Republican Party of Florida is going through with former Gov. Charlie Crist, who ended his relationship with his long-time party while running for Senate in 2010. Now that Crist, an independent, is getting cozy with Democrats, the state?GOP?is shouting to anyone who will listen that Democrats would make a big mistake to be spouse No. 2.
When Crist says something nice about President Barack Obama, the state?GOP?immediately shoots out a press release with something not so nice Crist said about Obama when he was a Republican. If Crist endorses a Democratic candidate, the party reminds people Crist used to say he was a Ronald Reagan Republican. There's strong speculation that Crist, 56, will challenge Gov. Rick Scott as a Democrat in 2014. He has dismissed talk of a potential return to politics, saying he won't even think about his future until after Jan. 1.
"I just think Charlie Crist is bad for the state of Florida," said state?GOP?Chairman Lenny Curry. "He's someone who's trying to recreate himself. These are serious times. The president campaigned on a plan that would raise the current top two tax brackets of 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent. Single taxpayers making less than $200,000 a year and married couples making less than $250,000, would not see their tax rates go up.
Republican opponents of the plan argue that the higher rates would hurt small businesses, many of which pay individual, not corporate tax rates. But the two new tax brackets would hit only 2.5 percent of small businesses, according to a recent report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a research group focused on issues affecting low- and moderate-income households, based on a Treasury Department analysis.?
The new rates would restore the top tax brackets to pre-Bush levels, which were already lower than for much of the last century. Until the sweeping tax reform in 1986, the top marginal rate was 50 percent or more, although most of the wealthiest households paid a much lower effective rate, thanks to dozens of loopholes and tax breaks that were eliminated by the tax code overhaul.
Now, the proposed new tax brackets would also apply to a relatively small number of households ? among the top two percent of incomes.? Most of the new revenues would come from the very top one-tenth of one percent, or those making an average of $8.4 million a year, according to a study by the Tax Policy Center.?
?The heated debate over whether to extend all of the tax cuts or whether to extend merely the vast majority largely concerns whether to extend an extra $310,000 in tax relief to the wealthiest 120,000 taxpayers,? wrote Tax Policy Center researcher Adam Looney.
Despite the sizeable income pool at the top, the new revenues raised by the proposed higher rates would be a drop in the deficit bucket, the study found, raising roughly $68 billion a year ? or about 7 percent of the current deficit. GAZA (Reuters) - Israel launched a major offensive against Palestinian militants in Gaza on Wednesday, killing the military commander of Hamas in an air strike and threatening an invasion of the enclave that the Islamist group vowed would "open the gates of hell".
The onslaught shattered hopes that a truce mediated on Tuesday by Egypt could pull the two sides back from the brink of war after five days of escalating Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli strikes at militant targets.
Operation "Pillar of Defense" began with a surgical strike on a car carrying the commander of the military wing of Hamas, the Islamist movement which controls Gaza and dominates a score of smaller armed groups.
Within minutes of the death of Ahmed Al-Jaabari, big explosions were rocking Gaza, as the Israeli air force struck at selected targets just before sundown, blasting plumes of smoke and debris high above the crowded city.
Panicking civilians ran for cover and the death toll mounted quickly. Seven people including two girls under the age of five were killed, the health ministry said.
A second Gaza war has loomed on the horizon for months as waves of Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli strikes grew increasingly more intense and frequent.
Israel's Operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009 began with a week of air attacks and shelling, followed by a land invasion of the blockaded coastal strip, sealed off at sea by the Israeli navy. Some 1,400 Palestinians were killed and 13 Israelis died.
Hamas said Jaabari, who ran the organization's armed wing, Izz el-Deen Al-Qassam, died along with an unnamed associate when their car was blown apart by an Israeli missile.
The charred and mangled wreckage of a car could be seen belching flames, as emergency crews picked up what appeared to be body parts.
GATES OF HELL
Israel confirmed it had carried out the attack and announced there was more to come. Reuters witnesses saw Hamas security compounds and police stations blasted apart.
"This is an operation against terror targets of different organizations in Gaza," Israeli army spokeswoman Colonel Avital Leibovitch told reporters.
Jaabari had "a lot of blood on his hands", she said. Other militant groups including Islamic Jihad were on the target list.
Immediate calls for revenge were broadcast over Hamas radio.
"The occupation has opened the gates of hell," Hamas's armed wing said. Smaller groups also vowed to strike back.
"Israel has declared war on Gaza and they will bear the responsibility for the consequences," Islamic Jihad said.
Southern Israeli communities within rocket range of Gaza were on full alert, and schools were ordered closed for Thursday. About one million Israelis live in range of Gaza's relatively primitive but lethal rockets, supplemented in recent months by longer-range, more accurate systems.
"The days we face in the south will, in my estimation, prove protracted," Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai, Israel's chief military spokesman, told Channel 2 TV.
"The home front must brace itself resiliently."
Mordechai said Israel was both responding to a surge in Palestinian rocket salvoes earlier this week and trying to prevent Hamas and other Palestinian factions from building up their arsenals further.
Among the targets of Wednesday's air strikes were underground caches of longer-range Hamas rockets, he said.
Asked if Israel might send in ground forces, Mordechai said: "There are preparations, and if we are required to, the option of an entry by ground is available."
HAMAS EMBOLDENED
Israel's intelligence agency Shin Bet said Jaabari was responsible for Hamas' takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007, when the militant Islamist group ousted fighters of the Fatah movement of its great rival, the Western-backed Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.
It said Jaabari instigated the attack that led to the capture of Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit in a kidnap raid from Gaza in 2006. Jaabari was also the man who handed Shalit over to Israel in a prisoner exchange five years after his capture.
Israel holds a general election on January 22 and conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to retaliate harshly against Hamas.
Hamas has been emboldened by the rise to power in neighboring Egypt of its spiritual mentors in the Muslim Brotherhood, viewing them as a "safety net" that will not permit a second Israeli thrashing of Gaza, home to 1.7 million Palestinians.
Egypt condemned Israel's strikes on Gaza and urged it to end the attacks at once.
Hamas has historically been supported by Iran, which Israel regards as a rising threat to its own existence due to its nuclear program.
In the flare-up that was prelude to Wednesday's offensive, more than 115 missiles were fired into southern Israel from Gaza and Israeli planes launched numerous strikes.
Seven Palestinians, three of them gunmen, were killed. Eight Israeli civilians were hurt by rocket fire and four soldiers wounded by an anti-tank missile.
Helped by Iran and the flourishing contraband trade through tunnels from Egypt, Gaza militias have smuggled in better weapons since the war of 2008-09.
But Gaza's estimated 35,000 Palestinian fighters are still no match for Israel's F-16 fighter-bombers, Apache helicopter gunships, Merkava tanks and other modern weapons systems in the hands of a conscript force of 175,000, with 450,000 in reserve.
Israel's shekel fell nearly one percent to a two-month low against the dollar on Wednesday after news of the Israeli air strikes broke.

For years, LongTail Video has offered its open source JW Player as a free alternative for businesses that don?t want to put their videos on YouTube or pay SaaS-based content management players like Brightcove or Ooyala. The biggest change in JW6, at least on the surface, is the player UI itself. The player hadn?t changed dramatically since being launched in 2005, and it kind of looked that way. The new version follows the trend toward modern, chrome-less video players, with bigger controls to make it easier for users to navigate the video or turn on and off features. The LongTail team also added hovering displays for the timeslider, volume, and quality and captions menu when moused over.
But the team has also made a lot of changes to the player behind the scenes. They rewrote the code to make it faster, especially in HTML5 mode, where it takes advantage of modern browser improvements like the HTML5 Fullscreen API and CSS3 transitions. The player also has been enhanced to enable automatic switching between HTML5 and Flash playback, depending on which browser is trying to reach it. While it will default to HTML5 playback, the embedded player will playback in Flash if HTML5 is not supported.
The update also includes support for Apple?s HLS, enabling publishers to take advantage of adaptive bit-rate capabilities on iOS devices for the first time. HLS will provide smoother playback and improved quality while viewers watch videos in the JW player, particularly in low-bandwidth situations. That will allow them to reach both desktop and iOS devices with a single embed.
LongTail Video has also simplified the formats it supports in both video and audio formats. In video, it supports MP4, FLV, and WebM formats, with support for AAC, MP3, and Vorbis on the audio side. It also supports both HLS and RTMP for streaming, as well as YouTube video rendering. The new player will also allow viewers to choose the video quality they prefer, which will work regardless of the format.
The final change comes not to the player itself, but to the way that LongTail Video monetizes it. While JW Player had a free version, the company had also offered paid version and various plugins available on an a la carte basis. It?s doing away with the add-ons system and bundling a lot of the most popular add-ons into different versions of the player.
There will be a free edition of JW6, which will be available with the basic feature set. But it also has a couple of paid versions. The Pro Edition, which costs $99 for embedding on a single site, allows users to disable the logo or add their own, and customize the right-click menu. There?s also a Premium addition that can be used on up to 10 commercial sites. It also supports Apple HLS and social sharing, and it shows related videos.
