US officials react to killing of Afghan civilians by an American soldier

US officials are scrambling to understand the reported killing of more than a dozen Afghan civilians by an American soldier. A new poll shows most Americans don't think the war is worth the costs.

American officials were scrambling Sunday to understand the reported killing of more than a dozen Afghan civilians by an American soldier.

In a statement Sunday, President Obama said he is ?deeply saddened? by the killing of villagers, most of them women and children.

"This incident is tragic and shocking, and does not represent the exceptional character of our military and the respect that the United States has for the people of Afghanistan," Obama said in a statement. "I offer my condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and to the people of Afghanistan, who have endured too much violence and suffering.?

According to reports from the area, a soldier (identified initially as a US army staff sergeant acting alone) left his base in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province at about 3 a.m. local time, walking to a village where he entered three homes and started shooting. He then returned to his base, where he was taken into custody.

"I gave President Karzai my assurances that we will bring those responsible to justice," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a statement. "We will spare no effort in getting the facts as quickly as possible, and we will hold any perpetrator who is responsible for this violence fully accountable under the law."

Afghan President Hamid Karzai had called the attack on civilian villagers an ?inhuman and intentional act? and an ?assassination.?

?The Taliban lost no time in condemning the Panjway killings,? the Wall Street Journal reports, ?describing them as ?genocide? that resulted from a U.S. night raid.?

?"The so-called American peacekeepers have once again quenched their thirst with the blood of innocent Afghan civilians," the Taliban statement said.

The incident comes at a troubled time for US-led efforts to reduce the influence of Taliban insurgents and secure peace in Afghanistan. Just two days earlier, four Afghan civilians were killed when NATO helicopters fired on those thought to be Taliban insurgents.

Reaction to the recent ?inadvertent? burning of Muslim holy books taken from Taliban prisoners by US soldiers has led to violent protests that killed some 30 people as well as the killing of six US service members.

The latest attack on civilians ? apparently wanton and no accident, as most such civilian deaths have been ? increases the pressure to withdraw American forces there ahead of the 2014 timeframe.

"I think that we have to reassess the entire region," Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Sunday on television news shows. "I think we're risking the lives of young men and women in a mission that frankly may not be doable."

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll out Sunday reflects this feeling across the American public.

?Overall views of the war in?Afghanistan?are in the pits,? the Washington Post reported in its analysis of the new poll. ?Sixty percent of Americans see the war as not worth its costs, nearly double the 35 percent saying the decade-long effort has warranted the expense and lost lives?. Also for the first time, more Republicans ?strongly? see the war as not worth fighting as see it as strongly justifying its costs.?

Overall, 54 percent of all Americans want to pull out US troops from Afghanistan even if the Afghan army is not adequately trained to carry on the fight, the poll finds.
?
?One key driver ? across party lines ? is a broadly held view that most Afghans are not supportive of U.S. efforts there,? the Washington Post reported Sunday. ?Just 30 percent of Americans sense that most Afghans endorse what the United States is trying to do.?

Experimenting with Online Gaming

March 12th, 2012

In my spare time I love to keep myself entertained by spending time online. I find the Internet to be an interesting and social place. I have access to the news when I want it, television programmes and movies, social media websites and games. Since going online back in 2006 I have never looked back and my television has become somewhat redundant in the corner of my living room.

I live on my own so it can get a little quiet around here. I don?t really have a large amount of surplus money each month so my social life isn?t really thriving. My friends all have children or work long hours so we only get together about one or twice a month. So I do rely on the Internet for a lot of social interaction and to pass the time to stop me getting bored and visiting gaming sites has become a passion of mine in recent months.

Speed is Key

I first entertained the idea of online gaming not long after I finally got connect to the Internet. Unfortunately I found that the websites all seemed to be very limited. A major issue came down to my internet speed which caused numerous problems and delays. Often my PC would crash in the middle of a game; that kind of thing can really become a cause of major frustration so it put me off.

Improvements in Modern Gaming

It wasn?t until more recently that I once again ventured into the world of online gaming. With faster broadband speeds, a great laptop with amazing specs and a little bit of an urge to play and socialise with fellow gamers I felt it was worth checking out how this world had progressed. I wasn?t expecting too much although I was certain the connection at least would have been improved.

What I discovered was a slick website which was full of personal interaction, sociable activities and tables which worked smoothly without interruption. I checked out a few gaming sites and I was really impressed. My friends and I when we do get together always have a few games for matchsticks which I really enjoy. I checked out a poker site a few years back which did not work well. This time I was impresses with the whole flow of the game which been greatly improved.

Live Updates, Support and Information via Social Networks

To my surprise I found that connecting with other players was possible and actually worked very well within gaming rooms / lobbies. I think that being able to connect directly to the employees of the website as well as other players certainly comes with many benefits. I appreciate being kept up to date in real time with the status of the servers as well as knowing when the big games are starting or being aired on YouTube.

Saving Money While Relaxing without Social Pressures

I haven?t even touched upon the obvious benefits of gaming online which include reduced expenditure. Spending on a night out once a week or even on a monthly schedule can quickly get out of hand. There is the cost of travel, admission and drinks to pay for and of course you have to look the part. By playing at home you can sit and have a respectable few hands in your pyjamas if you want, and sitting down to a table doesn?t mean having to fork out on the usual expenses.

Thanks to the latest technological advances online gaming as a whole actually works. In my opinion the fact that you can play outside of casinos brings many advantages to the game. Now the systems are working it is worth checking out the sites if you like the idea of playing at will.

Online gaming sites and?Poker?Stars.co.uk?have gone from strength to strength; enjoy real time games in the comfort of your home.

Malin's #CBR4 Review #23: A Rogue By Any Other Name by Sarah ...

When he was only just 21, Michael Lawler, the Marquess of Bourne lost his entire fortune, except the family estate entailed to him, in a card game to his former guardian, Viscount Langford. He?s cast out without a penny, and devotes the next decade to getting revenge. During that decade, he became part owner in a notorious gambling club, and managed to replace his fortune and then some, but he still wants the lands around his family home returned, and he burns to get back at Langford.

Lady Penelope Marbury was engaged to a duke, but her father ended the engagement when it turned out the Duke?s younger sister had got pregnant out of wedlock. The duke married another woman within a week of the dissolution of their engagement, and Penelope is still whispered about in polite society, years later. In order to get her married off, her father increases her dowry , with the land that borders his estate (and just so happens to be the property surrounding Bourne?s family home, which he won from Langford in another card game). Penelope and Michael were childhood friends, along with Langford?s son Thomas. Penelope hasn?t heard from Michael since he lost his fortune, and feels rather conflicted about land that?s rightfully his going towards getting her a husband. As one of five girls, she understands that her father wants her settled, and she feels it?s her fault (and the scandal after her broken engagement) that two of her sisters settled for less than exciting husbands. She wants better for her husbands.

So when Michael shows up at his old estate, and kidnaps Penelope as she?s out walking in the woods, determined to compromise her so they have to marry, and he can get the land in her dowry ? she forces him to agree to pretend theirs is a love match (so there won?t be another scandal), and that he will help her sisters find good husbands that they love. Once Penelope discovers that Thomas, who is still her good friend, will also be hurt and possibly ruined by Michael?s desire for revenge, she sets out to change her husband?s mind.

Having read Maclean?s?Love by Numbers?trilogy last year,?it was nice to see what happened to poor Penelope Marbury (the Duke she was engaged to is the hero of the third book in the trilogy).?Penelope is a great character, and what makes this book really work. Michael is angsty and conflicted and frankly quite douchy towards his awesome wife throughout much of the book, but unlike several other reviewers out there on the internets, I didn?t think he crossed the line into too unforgivably unlikable. Because Maclean shows us both sides of the relationship, we do see Michael?s conflicted feelings about using Penelope, and treating her callously, and it?s clear that some of the conflicts in their relationship could (like in most romances) have been solved if he just explained himself better to her. And he does step up nicely towards the end, and Penelope ends up being the one who saves him in more ways than one. The very end of the book also teases a very interesting relationship between Bourne?s reclusive book keeper business partner, and Penelope?s bluestocking younger sister ? so I can?t wait for the next book in the series.

Drinking coffee during pregnancy | Food and Drink Blog

Posted by admin on Mar 11th, 2012 in Coffee

Although during pregnancy the mother does not need to completely eliminate consumption of coffee , it is important to monitor your consumption and try to always be moderate.

According to experts, the ideal consumption of coffee during pregnancy is hard cups per day. This quantity provides between 200 and 300 milligrams of caffeine, which is not harmful to the mother and the future baby.

When the mother has digestive problems such as flatulence, nausea and vomiting, which are common during the first and last months of pregnancy, it is advisable to completely eliminate consumption of coffee and other caffeinated beverages.

All we know is not easy to stop drinking coffee, but if this is your case, you?ll need a bit of effort. In addition, you can substitute coffee for tea, which will also improve your digestion.

Cocoa smugglers on motorbikes evade Ivorian guards

OSSEIKRO, Ghana (Reuters) - In the dusty town of Osseikro just inside Ghana's border with Ivory Coast, the only billboard for miles welcomes visitors with the order: "Stop Smuggling Cocoa".

But the garish sign, put up by Ghana's cocoa sector body during this year's harvest, has done little to deter smuggling through a town which is a hotspot for the illicit trade.

"All of our cocoa is going to Ghana this year because of the prices," said Eric Comoe, head of a cocoa-growers cooperative in the Ivorian town of Abengourou, 30 km (20 miles) over the border.

"For the country it's a problem because when there's smuggling they don't get the tax. But for the farmers it's good," he acknowledged.

West Africa accounts for nearly three-quarters of world cocoa output and Ivory Coast and Ghana are the number one and two producers of the main ingredient of chocolate.

The smuggling is a problem because it deprives Ivory Coast of much-needed revenues as it seeks to rebuild after last year's civil war, and also skews the production data on which the cocoa industry's investment decisions are based.

While it has always gone on, smuggling spiked during the four-month conflict last year as hold-ups at Ivory Coast's two main ports prompted many farmers to funnel beans through Ghana to the east and north to Burkina Faso en route to port in Togo.

Industry estimates put the real size of last year's harvest in Ivory Coast at around 1.7 million tonnes against the some 1.5 million tonnes that were officially declared - suggesting around 200,000 tonnes were smuggled out unrecorded.

Yet even with the war over, the higher prices for cocoa in Ghana mean exporters and analysts forecast up to 145,000 tonnes of Ivory Coast's crop will be smuggled out to the country, and to a lesser extent to Guinea and Liberia, by end-April.

A reform of the Ivorian sector to ensure price guarantees for its farmers may over time change that. But for now, farmers in its eastern region get an average 700-750 CFA francs a kg ($1.40-1.50) compared to Ghana's set price of around 1,000 CFA.

"The price premium in Ghana was almost $900 per tonne at the start of the season but more recently has been close to $500 per tonne," said one commodities fund manager, noting the premium remained despite a recent increase in Ivorian prices.

POLICE LACK RESOURCES

Four trucks brimming with cocoa beans stood confiscated outside the deserted customs office in Abengourou on Sunday.

During a brazen attempt to cross into Ghana at the official border crossing in January, the trucks were stopped by customs, local cocoa dealers said.

This followed the Ivorian government move to step up its efforts to catch smugglers by deploying dozens of extra border patrol agents to eastern cocoa-growing towns late in December.

Local dealers said that while the capture of the four trucks had made smugglers more careful, it had not stopped the activity.

"Comparing the number of lorries they pick up and the number that go through, it's no comparison," said Comoe.

Customs officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they were insufficiently resourced to tackle the problem.

"We don't have cars or communication systems," said an Ivory Coast customs official.

The Ivory Coast cocoa body CGFCC was not available to comment.

Much of the illegal cocoa trade happens away from the official border crossing in the bush on narrow dirt tracks, easily navigated by motorbike, local dealers explained.

Trucks move the cocoa to nearby the border and then motorbikes carry around three 60-kg bags at a time via these tracks into Ghana, where it is re-bagged as Ghanaian cocoa.

Given the border regions share similar soil and weather, the beans should in theory be similar. However, Ghanaian cocoa officials insist their beans benefit from better handling, fertilization and crop spraying and so are far superior to Ivory Coast beans. Ivorian farmers disagree, saying they are capable of growing cocoa that is undistinguishable from Ghana's.

FOR THE MIDDLE-MAN, BUSINESS IS GOOD

In Osseikro, the premises of a middle-man, who said he sells large trade houses beans sourced from Ghanaian cooperatives and farms, is fronted by motorbikes on sale at 400,000 CFA each.

Emmanuel Yeboah says the bikes are merely a good second business and denies the existence of any major cross-border smuggling. But, wherever the beans which he handles originally come from, he confides that business is good.

"This year I get a fridge, freezer, a lot of things with my commissions," said Yeboah, who makes around 100 CFA per kg of cocoa he sources.

As part of its planned cocoa industry reforms, Ivory Coast plans to reintroduce stabilized prices next season, to shield local farmers from price swings and to combat smuggling.

But even then it is not expected that Ivory Coast and Ghana will set identical prices and any gap will still provide an incentive for smuggling.

Ivory Coast's cocoa reform aims to give farmers between 50 and 60 percent of the so-called CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) export price, while Ghana sets prices with the aim of giving farmers up to 70 percent of the CIF price.

Exporters estimate that if you take the Ivorian government proposal of giving farmers 50-60 percent of the price, the farmer is still not going to get much more than 600-700 CFA, based on current prices. ($1 = 495.7170 CFA francs)
