The College of Staten Island Cheerleading squad finally turned the corner tonight, putting three-straight runner-up finishes behind them by claiming the 2012 CUNYAC Cheerleading Championship in front of a feverish Sports & Recreation Center crowd at CSI.? For the Dolphins, it was their first conference crown since 2003.? The Dolphins narrowly bested second-place John Jay College by 16.5 points, while five-time defending-champion Brooklyn College came in third place and Medgar Evers College, fourth.

CSI was the third of the four squads to put on their show, a medley of stunts, jumps and chreography that seemed to work in perfect harmony.? The Dolphins did a fine job of landing all of their routines, keeping steady on rises and dismounts.? According to second year Head Coach Justine Green, the victory was well-deserved for a team that battled hard all season to perfect its routine.

Green says it was the focus of the team above all else that helped the Dolphins finally capture the crown in 2012.

?One of our challenges in the past was that we struggled mentally to get over that hump,? tells Green.? ?This year we just focused on ourselves.? We didn?t get caught up watching the other performances and mentally thinking we didn?t have what it took to win the championship.? We stayed focused on ourselves and cheered for one-another.? That concentration has helped take us to the next level, mentally and physically.?

CSI also came in third place in the individual jumping routine, where one cheerleader is chosen from the teams to show off two jumps.? Ashley Isaacs did the honors for the Dolphins, earning the bronze while Medgar Evers came in second and John Jay College came in third.

The competition was close for the top prize, however, as CSI scored a total of 270 points next to JJC?s 253.5 points and third place Brooklyn College?s 227.5.? John Jay exercised a very nice routine, with a heavy dance number that mixed in heavy beats and great choreography.? Brooklyn College was dazzling with its array of jumps and stunts, but the Bulldogs suffered from a handful of drops and hard landings, likely shaving points from their score.

?I was a little worried,? Green admitted. ?Even though we didnt have any drops we did wobble a little.? But we stayed with the routine and never lost confidence and got better and better.? We kept our smile, showed incredible spirit, and worked hard to finish the routine very well.?

For the Dolphins, the win was one sown by hard work and perseverance.? In 2003, CSI formed its first-ever Cheerleading squad, and the team was brilliant, winning a CUNYAC title the same year.? The team, however, was disbanded the very next year, and it wasn?t until 2009 that a handful of students started the grass-roots initiative back on the CSI campus, developing the squad into what it is today.? The team has developed quickly, taking second place in each of the past three seasons before tonight, a run that including a heartbreaking finish last year, when CSI lost by the slimmest total in CUNYAC history.

?It?s a great feeling,? Green said.? ?Those same kids who started the program are still heavily invested; coming to practice, offering advice, and polishing our routine.? CSI has been a big family for all of us, and to celebrate like this is truly special.?

After the competition, CSI was awarded their medals individualy in a ceremony headed by Commissioner Zak Ivkovic.? This was the first year ever that the College of Staten Island was chosen to host the event, and a large number of fans stayed in the stands cheering on the Dolphins, who seemed to celebrate equally with John Jay College on their second-place finish.

ECB to hold fire on rates, loans as crisis eases

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The European Central Bank will likely keep its interest rates and emergency credit programs on hold on Thursday, as it monitors the positive impact that its massive loans to banks have had on financial markets.

The ECB is credited with pulling Europe back from the debt crisis brink by offering a total of euro1 trillion ($1.32 trillion) to banks on Dec. 21 and Feb. 29. That eased a looming credit crunch, supported investor confidence, and caused borrowing rates to ease for financially weak countries like Italy and Spain.

With markets now more stable and inflation still higher than the bank likes to see, most analysts expect the 23-member governing council to decide to leave interest rates at 1 percent ? probably for several months ? and hold off more loans.

President Mario Draghi, however, will likely face questioning at his post-decision news conference about warnings from Germany's Bundesbank, about the risk the ECB has taken on by loosening rules for collateral on the emergency loans.

The Bundesbank, which holds one seat on the ECB council, apparently voted in favor of the latest bank loans. But it has expressed concern that excess liquidity can lead banks to buy risky assets and that the crisis cannot be solved "solely by throwing money at it," as Bundesbank head Jens Weidmann said in a speech.

Weidmann reportedly wrote Draghi a letter expressing concern about the risk of the looser collateral standards. The text of the letter has not been made public.

Whatever the longer-term risks, few deny the bank loans have eased the debt crisis by at least buying governments time to clean up their finances.

After the first issue of emergency loans in December, it became clear that some banks were using the money to buy government bonds, lowering bond interest rates and borrowing costs for hard-pressed governments. That indirect support was crucial because it is high borrowing costs that pushed Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek international bailout loans.

Additionally, the high number of banks taking up the second offer ? 800 banks took euro530 billion in the latest offering ? suggests that more small banks took their turn loading up on cheap, long-term financing. The loans are for up to 3 years and right now cost only 1 percent annual interest.

German labor unions are demanding 6.5 percent wage increases as national negotiations begin, and real estate prices have risen, especially in bigger cities.

Analysts at RBS, who originally predicted a quarter-point rate cut, now say rates will remain unchanged. But they still foresee quarter-point cuts in June and September, based on a more pessimistic view of the economy.

The eurozone economy shrank 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter and the European Union's executive commission predicts it will shrink another 0.3 percent in 2012.

The Bank of England will also hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, but its Monetary Policy Committee is not expected to move its key interest rate from a record low of 0.5 percent or vote for further monetary stimulus.

Recent economic indicators have been somewhat better than expected, so analysts expect the next stimulus package will not be cleared before May. In the meantime, the Bank of England will be monitoring external developments such as the debt crisis brewing in nearby European countries, the strength of the economic recovery in the U.S. and the rise in oil prices, which is keeping inflation above target.

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) ? Iceland's former prime minister has rejected charges he failed to adequately protect his country's economy from financial shocks in the first criminal trial of a world leader over the 2008 financial crisis.

"I reject all accusations, and believe there is no basis for them," Geir Haarde said as he took the stand on Monday. He said it was the first chance he had to answer questions in the case.

Haarde became a symbol of the bubble economy for Icelanders who lost their jobs and homes after the country's main commercial banks collapsed in 2008, sending its currency into a nosedive and inflation soaring.

Prosecutors opened the case at the Landsdomur, a special court being convened for the first time in Iceland's history.

Part of their case hinges on a charge that Haarde failed to implement recommendations a government committee had drawn up in 2006 to strengthen Iceland's economy.

Haarde told the court that the committee's work could not have prevented Iceland's economic crash.

"Nobody predicted that there would be a financial collapse in Iceland" in 2008, he said, adding that the government did not fully understand how much debt the country's banks had on their books.

Haarde is accused of negligence for failing to prevent the financial implosion from which the small island country is still struggling to recover.

In the crisis' immediate aftermath ? as unemployment and inflation skyrocketed ? many sought to affix blame for the havoc across the 330,000-strong nation. A wave of public protests forced Haarde out of government in 2009.

Haarde has pleaded not guilty and sought to have all charges dismissed, calling the proceedings "preposterous."

He has insisted Icelanders' interests were his "guiding light," and blamed the banks for the crisis, saying government officials and regulatory authorities tried their best to prevent the crisis and that his "conscience is clear."

The trial is expected to last until mid-March, with the court taking another four to six weeks to deliver its verdict.
