The Beville Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Friday to discuss a? censure of Mayor Jack Batson.
The board will also discuss an effort to petition the General Assembly for recall power for the town, as well as the board?s rules of procedure and the town?s personnel policy.
The Friday meeting was called by three commissioners: Joe Breault, Charles Bost and Donna Schardien.
At a special meeting last week, the board strongly rebuked Batson for negotiating with Leland officials about merging the two towns.
The board went on record opposing a? merger.
The commissioners? resolution decreed Batson ?is not authorized to and shall not communicate anything, directly or indirectly, in any manner whatsoever, about merging with Leland and is hereby directed by the board to cease and desist from any such communications.?
After that meeting, Batson told reporters he planned to keep pushing the matter.
The town of Oak Island also recently asked the state for recall powers.
In 2011, the General Assembly passed a bill that gave Oak Island a system to recall elected officials. The law allows voters to remove a mayor or member of the town council from his post if a majority of voters wanted to.
To remove elected officials, a recall committee must create a petition stating the grounds for removal and gather signatures from 25 percent of the town?s registered voters.
